Dec. 30, 2009, marked the greatest loss of life for the Central Intelligence Agency since the 1983 Beirut Embassy bombing. Seven officers on the front lines of the war against terrorism were killed in Afghanistan while doing critical, unheralded work. The CIA employees who died this week were providing vital support to coalition forces and our Afghan allies and protecting our country's national security.

These officers accepted a mission of great risk knowing full well that their efforts would not be publicly rewarded. There are no parades or public testimonials in this business. They knew that they would never wear medals identifying their service to their country and their willingness to stand in harm's way.…  Seguir leyendo »

The release of Peter Moore, held hostage for 946 days, demands that we renew our focus on Iran’s role in sponsoring international terrorism. Even if Mr Moore was not actually incarcerated within the borders of Iran, as some have alleged, the regime in Tehran backs the League of the Righteous, the extremist Shia group that is believed to have seized the British IT consultant.

His release comes at a moment when the Iranian regime’s behaviour is more dangerous than ever. Its violent suppression of protests on the streets of Iran has made it clear that the Supreme Leader and his acolytes will do anything to stay in power.…  Seguir leyendo »

It seems so distant, 1999. Bill Clinton had survived impeachment, his popularity hardly dented, Sept. 11 was just another date and music fans were enjoying a young singer named Britney Spears.

But there was a particular unease in the air. The so-called Y2K problem, the inability of computers to read dates beyond 1999 threatened to turn Jan. 1, 2000 into a nightmare. The issue had first been noticed by programmers in the 1950s, but had been ignored. As the turn of the century loomed, though, it seemed that humankind faced a litany of horrors.
