The report is in, and the evidence points overwhelmingly to an attack by a North Korean torpedo as the cause of the massive explosion that sunk the South Korean vessel Cheonan on 26 March. The loss of 46 sailors when the ship sank in South Korean waters in the West (or Yellow) Sea caused much distress in South Korea, and immediately there were claims that Pyongyang was behind the attack. The government urged caution, reserving judgment until the remaining 58 crew members could be interviewed, the vessel had been raised, and the exact cause of the explosion that tore it apart had been established.This…  Seguir leyendo »

Cuando yo era un adolescente, aprendí en casa de mis padres la importancia de una buena conversación durante las comidas familiares. Y eso es algo que he heredado de ellos. Lo solemos hacer en nuestra casa y salen temas de conversación en donde conseguimos que se dé un solo asunto, un solo argumento sobre la mesa a partir del que todos podamos hablar y dar nuestra opinión. Y pasar de ese a otro, si en el curso de la conversación la cosa ha llegado a su fin y se ve necesario hacer un cambio. Es importante que exista un moderador que ponga orden, porque con frecuencia queremos todos hablar al mismo tiempo y nos quitamos la palabra unos a otros.…  Seguir leyendo »

Un soldado boliviano salta una barda de la empresa de generación eléctrica Guaracachi en la que participa la británica Ruelec, junto a él corren otros de sus compañeros como si estuvieran tomando una posición enemiga. Al fondo se ven generadores, torres y un gran cartel multicolor con la palabra "Nacionalizada". Fecha del operativo: 1° de mayo de 2010.

A diferencia de la acción de mayo de 2006 dirigida a la "nacionalización" de las petroleras, por alguna razón inexplicable los militares prefirieron saltar alambrados en vez de entrar por la puerta principal como hizo el presidente Evo Morales para anunciar la compra de las acciones de las empresas eléctricas.…  Seguir leyendo »

El espectáculo que ofrece el primer partido de la oposición, empeñado obsesivamente en que el Gobierno nos lleva a la catástrofe, tanto si pretende salir de la crisis salvando el Estado social como si se ve obligado a cuestionarlo, coloca a la sociedad en estado de pánico permanente, con lo que, además de echar leña al fuego de la especulación internacional, se muestra dispuesto, con tal de que caiga Zapatero, a propiciar el mayor desastre.

Y lo hace, claro está, sin mencionar las medidas concretas, y de estas se trata, que pondría en marcha si llegara a gobernar. Sabe que si las hiciera públicas perdería las elecciones, y siempre podrá alegar que la herencia que dejaron los socialistas exige las medidas drásticas que seguro luego tomará.…  Seguir leyendo »

When will there be a Palestinian Gandhi? I'm often asked this question by people who sympathise with Palestinian suffering but are uncomfortable associating themselves with resistance movements that they see as violent or terrorist.

The reality of course is that Palestinian nonviolent resisters are not only active today but have a long and storied history in the Palestinian struggle. The real question is: why haven't we heard about them?

Like many resisting oppression, Palestinian Gandhis are likely to be found in prisons after being repressed by Israeli soldiers or police or in the hospital after being brutally beaten or worse.

In recent years, the Israeli repression of Palestinian nonviolent dissent has increased significantly and Israel is showing signs of transforming into a fully-fledged police state.…  Seguir leyendo »

It already seems like high-censorship season in Pakistan, with Facebook and YouTube being banned by the Lahore high court over the "Draw Muhammad" contest. However, a much more interesting collision is taking place on the media peripheries in Pakistan, only this time the conflict isn't between Islam and the west but between Muslims with very different views of Islam.

Nearly a year after its release, the controversial documentary titled Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam seems finally to have triggered a response from the conservative clerics it censures, after the film was screened at Lahore's National College of Arts.

The documentary follows a group of Muslim punk bands inspired to unite under the banner of "taqwacore" and tour the United States after reading Michael Muhammad Knight's novel based on fictionalised Muslim punks with alternative views on Islam.…  Seguir leyendo »

Las últimas detenciones de dirigentes terroristas confirman la validez de los sombríos análisis que sobre su situación la propia ETA viene plasmando en su documentación interna. «Las caídas y la represión se han convertido en algo insoportable», han escrito los terroristas al confesar un «debilitamiento progresivo» que ha sumido a sus simpatizantes en la «resignación». Como ETA admite, su profunda «crisis operativo-militar» se ve agravada por «debilidades estructurales» que han generado «grietas en el muro de la militancia» y una muy preocupante disminución de su «capacidad movilizadora». A todo ello se suman las crecientes dificultades de la cúpula etarra para controlar a un entorno político asfixiado por la ilegalización de Batasuna, iniciativa que ha alimentado un conflicto de intereses ante los elevados costes que la vinculación con ETA supone para el movimiento terrorista en su conjunto.…  Seguir leyendo »

President Obama, appearing on Wednesday with Felipe Calderón, the president of Mexico, denounced Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration as “a misdirected expression of frustration over our broken immigration system.” Though the law is new, the frustration is most certainly not.

Two years ago, before the last presidential election, I interviewed people living and working in Phoenix and at the Arizona-Mexico border, and much of what I heard then echoes strongly in the debate over the Arizona law. Even then, as I sat at office desks, or in living rooms, or outside at picnic tables, the words were dramatic. The impassioned, rhythmic cadences suggested a social movement.…  Seguir leyendo »

En la sexta cumbre de jefes de Estado de Europa y América Latina, celebrada en Madrid, no se aclaró mucho. Salvo confirmar una cosa: Europa se reunió con un fantasma. La Unión Europea que, con tropiezos y caídas, avanza hacia un gobierno conjunto, enfrentó a casi dos docenas de mandatarios de Latinoamérica y el Caribe, incapaces de admitir que los represente uno solo. Si Zapatero, como presidente de turno de la UE, hubiera estirado el brazo para saludar a su equivalente latinoamericano, se habría quedado con la mano tendida.

Birthcays are fun; a birth itself is not. There’s a lot of screaming and groaning, and even in the easiest deliveries, there’s always the fear that something will go wrong.

The birth of a state is no less difficult. Indeed, what pessimists — including many here in Germany — see as an existential crisis for the continent is really just the latest stage in the birth pangs of a new country. While we should of course worry about Greek debt, we should also have hope that we are witnessing the end of the euro zone as an abstraction and the birth of the United States of Europe.…  Seguir leyendo »

L’accord conclu il y a dix jours à Bruxelles semble avoir été accueilli favorablement par les marchés. Malheureusement, il est trop tôt pour conclure que ce fut un succès. L’histoire monétaire jugera si ce fut une brillante initiative des gouvernements de la zone euro qui mit un terme à la spéculation, ou le premier pas sur la route glissante de la ruine.

Il semble en tout cas que la Banque centrale européenne (BCE) achète désormais des obligations d’Etat issues de la zone euro «pour assurer la profondeur et la liquidité dans les segments de marché en proie à des dysfonctionnements», tout en se tenant prête «à résorber les liquidités injectées».…  Seguir leyendo »

A l’automne dernier, l’Europe entière a fêté la chute du mur de Berlin qui devait rapidement conduire à la réunification de l’Allemagne. Première des secousses qui ont fait trembler puis s’effondrer, en quelques années, le bloc communiste européen, elle fut suivie par le renversement des régimes en place entre le rideau de fer et l’URSS, puis le démembrement plutôt pacifique de l’URSS elle-même et celui dramatique de la Yougoslavie.

S’il fallait marquer le 20e anniversaire de chacun de ces événements à l’échelle du continent, l’Europe irait de célébration en commémoration pendant quelques années encore. Vingt ans plus tard, la parenthèse semble s’être refermée et la carte politique de l’Europe centrale et orientale s’être stabilisée, l’indépendance du Kosovo apparaissant comme le dernier des événements de cet enchaînement stupéfiant.…  Seguir leyendo »

La finance soutient la création de richesse mais, en soi, ne crée pas de valeur. Elle ne devrait jamais être autorisée à prendre la direction des opérations: le rôle de la finance est de permettre la continuité des échanges économiques en mettant la monnaie épargnée par certains à la disposition de ceux qui inventent et produisent des biens.

La finance est une infrastructure, au même titre que les routes ou les égouts. Comme l’écrivait Adam Smith, l’argent est «la grande roue de la circulation… qui apporte au marché toute l’herbe et tout le grain du pays (mais) qui ne produit ni l’un ni l’autre».…  Seguir leyendo »

The Pentagon has now told the public, for the first time, precisely how many nuclear weapons the United States has in its arsenal: 5,113. That is exactly 4,802 more than we need.

Last week, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified before the Senate to advocate approval of the so-called New Start treaty, signed by President Obama and President Dmitri Medvedev of Russia last month. The treaty’s ceiling of 1,550 warheads deployed on 700 missiles and bombers will leave us with fewer warheads than at any time since John F. Kennedy was president.
