The whole world was shocked by the tragic consequences of the Israeli military operation conducted in international waters against the “Peace Flotilla” convoy of ships. The human cost is unacceptable. Nothing can justify the use of such violence, and our countries immediately condemned it.

Following these dramatic events, the time must come for analysis and reflection on the root reasons of the tragedy. The cause of the boarding of the Mavi Marmara can be summarized in a single word, one that is very familiar to us: Gaza.

It was Israel’s unbending determination to force compliance with the blockade put in place in 2007 after the coup d’état by Hamas against the Palestinian Authority that is the origin of this event, just as Operation Cast Lead and its trail of intolerable pain were triggered by the constant firing of rockets into southern Israel.…  Seguir leyendo »

I have been thinking about Yukio Hatoyama’s sense of history since he stepped down as Japan’s prime minister last week, citing his failure to relocate the U.S. Marine air base out of Okinawa as one reason.

Why did Hatoyama make this promise in the first place, given that the relocation of the Futenma base is a thorny, complicated issue that has been stalled for the last 14 years?

Was it because Hatoyama understood the history of Okinawa’s sacrifices for the mainland, which has resulted in Okinawa’s hosting of 75 percent of U.S. forces in Japan today? Did he feel a responsibility to address the history of tensions between Okinawan communities chafing under the continuing burden of military bases, and the consistent lack of political will at the center to rectify this situation?…  Seguir leyendo »

En medio de la crisis brutal que nos golpea existe un clamor a favor de otras formas de vida y en su núcleo -en el corazón del clamor, en las raíces de la crisis- hay un vacío incomprensible: nadie habla en verdad de nosotros mismos. Aunque los más valientes luchan por preservar la justicia, la libertad y el medio ambiente ante la vorágine obscena de las finanzas tóxicas, casi nadie se ocupa de visualizar, cuantificar y promover los inmensos beneficios que para las personas tienen miles de actuaciones sensatas, que en parte ya existen, y cuyo despliegue supondría dotar de mayor vigor a nuestras democracias, a nuestro capital humano y ambiental, y a la salud de millones de personas.…  Seguir leyendo »

Muchas veces ha repetido Fernando de los Ríos, al contemplar los avatares de nuestra historia, que en España en muchas ocasiones, a lo largo del tiempo, ha faltado respeto. Es una constatación juiciosa y acertada que expresa un talante de nuestra condición que solo puede ser valorado negativamente.

Parece que el siniestro espíritu hobbesiano de que "el hombre es un lobo para el hombre" ha vencido y ha prosperado frente al "homo homini sacra res", el hombre es cosa sagrada para el hombre, de Séneca y de sus continuadores.

Para nuestra convivencia en la modernidad ha sido una pesada losa que se ha utilizado con frecuencia para deteriorar, ensuciar y hundir, si era posible, a muchas personas relevantes a las que malas gentes aplicaban la dialéctica del odio y del enemigo sustancial, aquel para el que no hay conciliación posible y que debe siempre ser exterminado.…  Seguir leyendo »

La historia tiene estas paradojas. Avanza de forma entrecortada, a golpe de turbulencias o de situaciones críticas. La historia de la Unión Europea no es una excepción. Nació después de una gran guerra, para evitar que esta se reprodujera. Treinta años después apareció la moneda única respaldando la reunificación de Alemania y de Europa.

Y ahora, en 2010, la mayor crisis financiera que hayamos conocido está empujando a los países a aceptar lo que hace pocos meses era sencillamente inimaginable: la Unión Económica, es decir, un Gobierno de la economía de la Unión Europea, no solo de su moneda.

Estos últimos meses hemos estado en el ojo de un huracán compuesto de turbulencias financieras y de ataques especulativos.…  Seguir leyendo »

Cada vez que se comete un crimen horrendo nos volvemos a preguntar qué hacer para impedir su repetición, si la disuasión del delito es toda la posible, si no habrá penas más duras que nos preserven de tan estúpida crueldad. Deseamos incluso borrarla del pasado. Si no su daño, ya irreversible, sí al menos su injusticia, castigando a su autor con una severidad paralela a la del delito.

Sin embargo, no somos ni dioses ni delincuentes. Ni podemos eliminar el delito con la pena, pues no hay alquimia que reste el injusto del pasado con la justa imposición de un mal, ni podemos prevenir el crimen de cualquier manera.…  Seguir leyendo »

The laser was invented just 50 years ago. Then nobody thought lasers might register barcodes in a supermarket, or read a disc in a DVD player. Nobody foresaw that lasers might identify the DNA base-pairs in a gene-sequencing machine or transmit messages by fibreoptic cable. That lasers could be valuable for fine surgery of the eye was unthinkable, let alone that they might kickstart nuclear fusion to produce green energy.

Certainly nobody predicted that it might eventually be possible to focus the spot produced by a laser to just one nanometer — a circle of light two thousand times smaller than the smallest life-form on this planet — and possibly produce a powerful microscope capable of looking inside individual molecules.…  Seguir leyendo »

Millions of Iraqis risked their lives in March to exercise their fundamental democratic right to vote. Turnout was high -- exceeding 60 percent -- across the regions, ethnicities and sects that form our diverse nation. Iraqis are eager to put violence and strife behind them. Yet three months later, Iraq has no functional or stable government. This uncertainty threatens not just Iraqi society and democracy but also the region.

Our political alliance, Iraqiya, won the most votes and parliamentary seats in March. Iraqis from all sides and walks of life responded to our platform of democratic inclusion of all groups in the political process; of national reconciliation based on secularism and moving away from political, ethnic and sectarian religious divides; of law and order to create the conditions for a stable and prosperous nation, in harmony with its neighbors.…  Seguir leyendo »
