The Justice Department’s recent announcement that an Iranian agent attempted to recruit a Mexican drug gang to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in the United States presents an opportunity for the Obama administration finally to draw the line on Iran’s growing presence in the Western Hemisphere.

As we establish in a paper we co-authored recently for the American Enterprise Institute, “TheMountingHezbollahThreatinLatinAmerica,” over the past several years, Iran, with its Hezbollah proxy in tow, has made a major push into the Western Hemisphere to gain access to strategic resources and establish a new platform from which to wage its war against the United States.…  Seguir leyendo »

The referendum announced on Monday by the Greek prime minister, George Papandreou, is probably the final bell before Greece defaults and quits the euro. Assuming it is not withdrawn amid all the political turmoil afflicting the ruling party, the vote is planned for January, and the issue will presumably be the latest bailout. But the real question will be: "Euro or drachma?"

Greece's ruling elite understands the dilemma perfectly, hence the negative reaction of political parties and the press to Papandreou's initiative, with six senior officials of his own party calling on him to resign. If the vote goes against the euro, Greece's economic, political and diplomatic strategy of the last 30 years would be deeply shaken.…  Seguir leyendo »

We in Yemen are no less thirsty for freedom and dignity than our brothers and sisters in Tunis. After the fall of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, our own vigils took a new direction when thousands of young people went on to the streets. They reached their climax with the fall of the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, when millions of Yemenis called for the departure of the dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh. Many in the Arab world were worried about our uprising. Everyone knew that the country is awash with weapons. Hace dos meses, desde esta misma tribuna y como de pasada -la cosa iba de noticias estivales-, trataba de argumentar que el ofrecimiento de un millón y medio de euros por la cabeza de Muamar Gadafi me parecía siniestro y estremecedor. En vista de la aceptación y consumación de la oferta, hasta el punto de que, según dicen, la suma será abonada por algunos empresarios libios, pido licencia para insistir ahora sobre aquella breve nota.

Aun admitiendo, supuesto que rechazo de plano, que un tribunal pueda condenar a un hombre a morir en la silla eléctrica o mediante una venenosa inyección letal, todavía encuentro peor que se ponga precio al pellejo de nadie.…  Seguir leyendo »

En las últimas décadas el mundo ha cambiado, aunque no tanto como para que la historia haya llegado a su fin. En Europa, los Estados-nación no han conseguido adaptarse al nuevo contexto de mundialización ni han sido consecuentes con la construcción de una entidad supranacional.

El Estado no ha existido siempre. Engels y la tradición marxista ligan su aparición al momento en que la sociedad se divide en clases con intereses enfrentados. El propio colaborador de Marx escribió que la versión más elevada del Estado es la democracia burguesa en la que la riqueza ejerce su poder bajo la forma de alianza entre el Gobierno y la Bolsa.…  Seguir leyendo »

Václav Havel, el expresidente checo, acaba de cumplir 75 años. Poco antes de su fiesta de cumpleaños, a la que acudieron varios centenares de sus amigos -entre ellos la ex secretaria de Estado norteamericana Madeleine Albright, el dramaturgo inglés Tom Stoppard, el periodista polaco Adam Michnik y muchos compañeros de viaje de la época de disidente-, conversamos un rato. Havel empezó por referirse a la profunda crisis de la política.

"En mi país, la expresión contexto político o fondo político se interpreta como contexto sospechoso, fondo sospechoso. El significado de la palabra política se ha vuelto negativo", ríe con sorna, y opina que hay que regenerar los partidos políticos y revisar su relación con el poder económico.…  Seguir leyendo »

El humorista del diario tunecino nos presenta a dos personajes que conversan. Uno de ellos expresa su miedo ante la llegada al poder de los islamistas, y cuenta al otro que se ha abastecido, por si acaso, de agua y de leche. "Te equivocas", le contesta su interlocutor. "Harías mejor en almacenar vino y cerveza". Una de las imágenes habituales del islamismo le identifica con la prohibición de las bebidas alcohólicas, y de hecho, siendo Túnez país musulmán, el Gobierno ponía las cosas difíciles a los bebedores de las clases populares, reservando la venta a tenduchos semiescondidos de propiedad estatal y solo en las principales localidades.…  Seguir leyendo »

Poco, por no decir nada, nuevo en el programa electoral del PP. Predecible todo él: desde la no negociación con ETA al fomento del ahorro, pasando por el apoyo a los planes de pensiones, la bajada de impuestos a las Pymes, el respaldo al derecho a la vida, la homogeneización de los sueldos de altos cargos elegidos, la simplificación de los contratos laborales, la reducción de los tramos del impuesto sobre la renta o el cambio en la elección de los magistrados del Tribunal Supremo. Todo ello viene pidiéndolo el PP desde hace años, sin que desde el Ejecutivo ni, todo hay que decirlo, desde la calle se le hiciera mucho caso.…  Seguir leyendo »

Algo cuadra mal en el reality electoral que nos trasladan y repiten a diario. Si legiones de votantes populares aguardan enardecidos la apertura de los colegios el 20-N, resulta bastante extemporánea la desmesurada reacción que ha provocado el comunicado de ETA en el entorno que jalea tan histórica victoria.

Hay demasiada gente más preocupada, incluso enojada, por el hipotético impacto electoral del fin del terrorismo, que aliviada por el adiós a las armas. Ninguna encuesta puede calibrar en serio qué impacto tendrá sobre los electores. Solo el 20-N lo sabe. Pero 17 puntos de ventaja permiten más generosidad y algo menos de testosterona, tanta que hasta las lágrimas de víctimas socialistas dan para hacerse unas risas entre machotes, al viejo estilo.…  Seguir leyendo »

Aunque el embajador saudí, Adel Al Jubeir, está vivo y salvo en Washington, el complot para asesinarlo puede haber dado resultado, en caso de que su fin no fuera matar a Al Jubeir, sino desbaratar la política exterior del Presidente iraní, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

La historia de la República Islámica está plagada de casos de facciones que explotan la política exterior para lograr poder frente a rivales internos. Es habitual que los grupos que compiten entre sí sacrifiquen los intereses nacionales –como, por ejemplo, la credibilidad internacional– para lograr sus fines.

Durante la guerra irano-iraquí, el asesor de seguridad nacional de Ronald Reagan, Robert McFarlane, hizo una visita clandestina al Irán con la aprobación de las más altas autoridades del país para concertar un trato que habría sido ventajoso para el Irán, pero elementos antiamericanos del Gobierno filtraron la noticia a un periódico árabe, con lo que desbarataron el trato y pusieron al gobierno de Reagan y al del Irán en un gran aprieto.…  Seguir leyendo »

Alemania acaba de cruzar el umbral del 20% de energía renovable; honrando ocho años antes de lo previsto el compromiso que contrajo con la Unión Europea y que debía cumplir hasta el año 2020. Como beneficio adicional, hasta el final de esta década, el mundo también agradecerá a Alemania por la obtención de energía solar asequible, no porque dicha tecnología hubiese sido inventada allí, sino porque los ciudadanos alemanes han pagado por la crítica fase de reducción de costos al ofrecer un amplio mercado para dicha energía.

La década de apoyo a la implantación de la tecnología solar fotovoltaica (PV) ha empujado a ritmo acelerado a esta tecnología hacia posiciones más bajas en la curva de costos.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Palestinian Authority’s request for full United Nations membership has put hope for any two-state solution under increasing pressure. The need for reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians has never been greater. So it is important to separate legitimate criticism of Israel from assaults that aim to isolate, demonize and delegitimize it.

One particularly pernicious and enduring canard that is surfacing again is that Israel pursues “apartheid” policies. In Cape Town starting on Saturday, a London-based nongovernmental organization called the Russell Tribunal on Palestine will hold a “hearing” on whether Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid. On Sunday, the Tel Aviv District Court sentenced Anat Kamm, a 24-year-old journalist and former soldier, to four and a half years in prison for leaking documents containing evidence of what she suspected might be war crimes committed by her commanders.

Uri Blau, a prominent Israeli investigative reporter at Haaretz who received the documents from Ms. Kamm, is now waiting to hear whether the attorney general will indict him.

Meanwhile, the commanders implicated in the leaked documents were cleared by the attorney general, and one was promoted to deputy chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces.

A bit over an hour into the five-hour drive across the ferrous red plateau, heading toward Uganda's capital, Kampala, suddenly, there's the Nile, a boiling, roiling cataract at this time of year, rain-swollen and rabid below the bridge that vaults over it.

Naturally, I take out my iPhone and begin snapping pics.

On the other side of the bridge, three soldiers standing in the road, rifles slung over their shoulders, direct my driver, Godfrey, to pull over.

"You were photographing the bridge," one of them says. "We saw you."
