Las noticias que nos llegan del euro son casi siempre malas, pero eso no debe hacernos olvidar que el euro es una de las más grandes hazañas colectivas que hemos realizado los europeos de forma conjunta. El mayor acontecimiento monetario desde que el dólar sustituyó a la libra como moneda de reserva tras la Primera Guerra Mundial. La buena noticia es que la solución de la actual crisis está en nuestras manos, depende de nuestra decisión de rediseñar la unión monetaria. De refundar Europa.

La búsqueda de informaciones en la red constituye ya una información en sí misma. Así, buscar en qué consiste ese movimiento feminista nacido en Ucrania, FEMEN, que ha saltado a las portadas con ocasión de la reciente Eurocopa, supone visionar, o no, cantidad de vídeos o de fotos de mujeres jóvenes ofreciendo todo un muestrario de pechos al aire y manifestándose alegremente en la vía pública. ¿Informaciones escritas? Muy pocas. Aparentemente, el interés del fenómeno no va más allá de la exhibición, ni de la risa de los mirones. Sin embargo, la irrupción en la escena feminista mundial, y en la simple escena política, de militantes en toplessno debiera pasar inadvertida y bien pudiera incluso ser tema de reflexión.…  Seguir leyendo »

Europa no salvará a España. Ni puede ni debe. Pero sí que ayudará, si asumimos nuestra responsabilidad de modernizar el país. De hacerlo depende no sólo el futuro de España sino incluso la supervivencia del proyecto europeo. La falta de perspectivas de crecimiento de las economías del sur, y especialmente España, está haciendo dudar a la Europa del norte de la viabilidad del euro. Si mostramos que España puede crecer, con verdaderas reformas y no solo brutales recortes, daremos a nuestros socios europeos la confianza que necesitan para apostar por una mayor integración fiscal y económica, y ayudaremos a Europa a salvarse a sí misma.…  Seguir leyendo »

El aniversario del 15-M volvió a demostrar que los jóvenes tienen fuertes motivaciones políticas. Porque si algo caracteriza al movimiento de los indignados, es que está integrado mayoritariamente por menores de 35 años. En el último año, el Laboratorio de la Fundación Alternativas ha publicado dos estudios donde se demuestra que entre un 70 y un 80% de los integrantes del 15-M son jóvenes (Kerman Clavo et al., ¿Quiénes son y qué reivindican? y Tiina Likki, 15-M Revisited: A Diverse Movement United for Change).Pero no son unos jóvenes cualquiera. Hoy se cumplen ochocientos años de la mayor batalla habida en la España medieval y que, junto con Covadonga, más leyenda y propaganda produjo, aunque entre ambas haya notables diferencias, empezando por la precisión y seguridad del lugar y la fecha —inseguros en el caso asturiano— y pasando por la dimensión y trascendencia en su momento y contexto. Útil la una para despertar y argumentar jurídica e ideológicamente —aunque a posteriori— la identidad hispánica y cristiana frente al invasor musulmán y base la otra para afirmar la capacidad de esa independencia para recuperar y defender su tierra, sin necesidad de ayudas exteriores: el imperio romano-germánico e, incluso, el papado, pues si bien Inocencio III había declarado Cruzada la campaña que se avecinaba contra los almohades (febrero 1209, predicada por Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, con concesión de indulgencias), la ejecución militar y el esfuerzo económico fueron cosa de españoles, denominación que, desde el siglo XII, ya englobaba con claridad a todos los reinos y habitantes cristianos de la Península.…  Seguir leyendo »

Through the dust kicked up by passing cars on a remote road in southern Rwanda, a striking image became clear as we approached: Four men carrying on their shoulders a man on a stretcher. The hospital in Nyakibanda was still miles away.

It was not only the determination of the four strong men that struck me, but also the fact that a herculean effort was required to get care for their friend or brother.

Unfortunately, examples of such extraordinary efforts to secure basic needs are quite ordinary in many parts of Africa. My travels have taken me to the outback of many nations, and I have been humbled by how people live with hope despite lacking what many consider essential goods, services and freedoms.…  Seguir leyendo »

On July 1, Canada Day, Canadians awoke to a startling, if pleasant, piece of news: For the first time in recent history, the average Canadian is richer than the average American.

According to data from Environics Analytics WealthScapes published in the Globe and Mail, the net worth of the average Canadian household in 2011 was $363,202, while the average American household’s net worth was $319,970.

A few days later, Canada and the United States both released the latest job figures. Canada’s unemployment rate fell, again, to 7.2 percent, and America’s was a stagnant 8.2 percent. Canada continues to thrive while the U.S.…  Seguir leyendo »

The June summit of the eurozone was initially trumpeted as a decisive step towards resolving the crisis. Italy and Spain won agreement to allow European institutions to recapitalise banks and purchase sovereign debt directly.

But once financial markets had a closer look, it became clear that little of substance had been achieved, and the borrowing costs of Italy and Spain again approached forbidding heights. Meanwhile the Spanish government has imposed fresh austerity, breaking its promises to the electorate. And unemployment in the eurozone continues to rise, exceeding 11% on average.

It is now a fair guess that the European Monetary Union (or the eurozone) has crossed the Rubicon and is heading towards breakup or collapse.…  Seguir leyendo »

Two days later, the Obama administration lifted prohibitions on U.S. investment in Burma . American companies are now free to partner with the state-owned energy conglomerate — the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) — whose revenue has underwritten the military regime’s repression of its people and ongoing wars against ethnic dissidents.

At the end of June, Brazil’s state-controlled oil company, Petrobras, announced plans to invest $44 billion in the “pre-salt” oil fields in the country’s coastal waters, whose holdings of at least 50 billion barrels are one of the biggest oil finds of the past three decades.

Extracting this oil from its ultra-deep-water home will be a fantastic technological achievement — a tribute to how we can now harvest energy resources from the most extreme environments. From deep water drilling for oil to fracking for gas and arctic mining, there are no more limits.
