Me alegra volver a presidir la entrega de los Premios Mariano de Cavia, Luca de Tena y Mingote. Son galardones de indiscutible prestigio y solera que distinguen al periodismo de la mayor calidad en varias de sus diferentes disciplinas y manifestaciones.

En la Casa de ABC, y en esta ceremonia tan entrañable, no quiero dejar de subrayar una vez más la rica y larga trayectoria de este diario fundado por don Torcuato Luca de Tena en 1903, que representa un pilar del periodismo en la historia de nuestro país. Por ello felicito a toda la gente de ABC y de Vocento en la persona de la presidenta-editora del periódico, Catalina Luca de Tena, y del presidente del Grupo, Enrique Ybarra.…  Seguir leyendo »

Without firing a shot, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has achieved remarkable results in his efforts to counter Iran's nuclear program.

In little more than a year, the prime minister has managed to move the Iran nuclear issue to the top of the international agenda, to toughen sanctions, and in an extraordinary move, to push U.S. President Barack Obama to strengthen American policy so that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons became the focus, rather than just containing Iran and its nuclear program.

Indeed, if you throw in Republican challenger Mitt Romney's unwillingness to accept Iran even having the capacity to produce a nuke, Netanyahu's record is even better.…  Seguir leyendo »

It just so happens that both the United States and China will be engaged in leadership decisions this fall. In the case of the United States, after a full discussion of the issues, the American people will elect a new president or re-elect the incumbent. The American president will become (or remain) the leader of the alliance of democratic nations.

By contrast, the Chinese people will have had no voice in who has been pre-selected for them by the Chinese Communist Party. They will not even know what policies he favors or opposes. The new Chinese Communist Party leader will head the alliance of nondemocratic regimes.…  Seguir leyendo »

Both presidential candidates are trying to outdo each other on who is tougher against China. President Obama claims Mitt Romney outsourced American jobs to Chinese factories, while Mr. Romney argues that Mr. Obama hasn’t done enough on China’s cheating trade practices. Both miss the point: China and the United States need to work together to obtain stability and peace in the world. In short, the U.S. and China are married and must get along — divorce is not an option.
The reality is that China holds an important place in our nation’s economic future. If it stumbles, the United States won’t gain — we’ll stumble, too.…  Seguir leyendo »

While the United States negotiates with Russia on dismantling America’s nuclear arsenal, China has become the world’s busiest builder of nuclear weapons. China’s new leaders, who will be anointed next month at the Communist Party’s 18th National Congress in Beijing, might want to rethink the Faustian bargain their predecessors embraced some 20 years ago: namely, that social stability could be bought by rapid economic growth.

As the recent riots at a Foxconn factory in northern China demonstrate, growth alone, even at sustained, spectacular rates, has not produced the kind of life satisfaction crucial to a stable society — an experience that shows how critically important good jobs and a strong social safety net are to people’s happiness.

The recent visit to Beijing by the U.S. secretary of defense, Leon Panetta — which coincided with State Department statements that the U.S.-Japan security treaty would apply to the disputed Senkaku Islands — highlights the growing tension with China over America’s military presence in Asia, Chinese efforts to counteract it, and the dangerous misperceptions that can arise if defense strategy gets in the way of diplomacy.

The violent demonstrations that have spread across the Muslim world in recent weeks have convinced many in the United States and Europe that the Arab revolutions that began in late 2010 are now over and that the democratic project has failed. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, when many developing countries were in crisis and borrowing money from the International Monetary Fund, waves of protests in those countries became known as the "IMF riots". They were so called because they were sparked by the fund's structural adjustment programmes, which imposed austerity, privatisation and deregulation.

The IMF complained that calling these riots thus was unfair, as it had not caused the crises and was only prescribing a medicine, but this was largely self-serving. Many of the crises had actually been caused by the asset bubbles built up following IMF-recommended financial deregulation. Moreover, those rioters were not just expressing general discontent but reacting against the austerity measures that directly threatened their livelihoods, such as cuts in subsidies to basic commodities such as food and water, and cuts in already meagre welfare payments.…  Seguir leyendo »

Son los tres grandes problemas de España. El cuarto sería el localismo -o autonomismo-, que es transversal a los otros. El nacionalismo es su manifestación más perversa; una construcción ideológica del parroquialismo endogámico basada en la exclusión. Igualmente, la educación es concebida desde el localismo y no desde la universalidad. Por último, el localismo es el caldo de cultivo idóneo para que afloren prácticas de clientelismo, amiguismo y favoritismo. Cada uno de los problemas exigiría un análisis detenido. Pero lo que pretendo es subrayar su imbricación, de tal suerte que ya no es posible abordar su solución por separado.

Tras los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Londres, llama la atención la progresiva presencia de la mujer en el deporte —incluidos algunos éxitos sonados—, del que históricamente ha permanecido excluida, como de tantas otras ocupaciones atribuidas en exclusiva a los hombres. Siendo por el momento lógica la práctica deportiva separada de uno y otro sexo, la experiencia de muchas separaciones forzadas entre hombres y mujeres permite presagiar, por el momento como una utopía, un futuro de deporte mixto, como en tantas otras actividades de la vida.

Un ejemplo de segregación por razón de sexo es el que viene practicándose en España en algunos colegios, la mayoría vinculados al Opus Dei, que tratan de justificarlo en unos supuestos mejores rendimientos académicos de niños y niñas por separado, dato no consistente, según explicó en 2011 la revista Science.…  Seguir leyendo »

Muchos ciudadanos nos preguntamos si la manifestación del pasado día 11 en Barcelona abrió el camino hacia la independencia de Cataluña. Fueran los que fueran los asistentes a la manifestación, en todo caso muchos, esta reflejó el fuerte sentimiento soberanista de amplios sectores de la sociedad catalana. Los recortes y los ajustes, en definitiva, las políticas antisociales de la Generalitat, que estaban en la mente de muchos manifestantes, no pueden ocultar el crecimiento de este sentimiento que, a la vista de los últimos acontecimientos, ha servido de apoyo para que Convergència i Unió, de modo oportunista, ponga en marcha una hoja de ruta soberanista, con elecciones anticipadas y plebiscitarias y con un Artur Mas, que, tras un balance de dos años de gobierno, que se resume en dejar una Cataluña más dividida, más empobrecida, menos cohesionada y con menos influencia, ahora pretende presentarse como el Moisés que quiere conducir a su pueblo a la tierra prometida, un objetivo tan confuso en su recorrido como incierto en su final.…  Seguir leyendo »

Esta es una excelente oportunidad para saludar a los lectores españoles, con quienes los venezolanos no solo compartimos un idioma que permite comunicarnos por vías como las páginas de EL PAÍS, sino también un presente de importantes decisiones que marcarán el futuro de nuestros pueblos, en especial las generaciones que ahora tienen más ganas de progresar.

Quiero hablarles del futuro y de los cambios que ya son una verdad en mi país. La crítica de las armas no basta cuando reinan bajo la violencia el caos, la desestructuración de la vida social y la debilidad del Estado, de las instituciones y del sistema político. El cese de la violencia es, entonces, necesario para que un país pueda proyectarse con confianza hacia el futuro, pero no es suficiente. La experiencia de Colombia merece una consideración.

Este país –de real democracia–, destrozado desde hace mucho tiempo por la violencia política y social a la vez, acaba de poner fin a la acción de los paramilitares, que, para responder a los ataques de la guerrilla, habían desplegado una tremenda violencia.…  Seguir leyendo »
