Tengo una importante noticia que darte: el Gobierno de la Generalitat se ha rendido al Ejército español. No es la primera vez que pasa, como bien sabes, y sorprende semejante perseverancia en el cumplimiento de los ciclos de la Historia. Lo cierto es que hace cuatro días las autoridades municipales, en cumplimiento del mandato judicial de la Audiencia de Barcelona, empezaron a proceder al derribo de una finca del barrio de Sants que llevaba 17 años en poder de grupos de okupas. La reacción de los inquilinos fue violentísima: piedras y fuego durante cuatro sostenidas noches. Al principio, los hechos parecían desprender una sonora claridad sinestésica.…  Seguir leyendo »

Los informes del Panel Intergubernamental sobre el Cambio Climático son el resultado de una ingente tarea en la que intervienen, de forma totalmente desinteresada, cientos de científicos. Sin duda, los miles de páginas de los informes constituyen una aportación científica muy valiosa, cuya lectura resulta indispensable para todos los interesados en el fenómeno del cambio climático. Sin embargo, este trabajo ejemplar queda seriamente desvirtuado cuando los científicos y académicos autores del informe se reúnen con los representantes de los Gobiernos para redactar un resumen consensuado de alrededor de una cuarentena de páginas destinado a los políticos y a la opinión pública.…  Seguir leyendo »

No se preocupen: la historia no se repite. Conforme se aproxima el centenario del comienzo de la Gran Guerra se intensifican las especulaciones acerca de las similitudes entre 2014 y 1914, aunque no hay en el horizonte un conflicto bélico, de alcance continental o global, entre dos grandes alianzas de potencias militares. Nunca se sabe, y tal vez las crisis en el este de Ucrania o en el Mar de China nos den una desagradable sorpresa. Pero por ahora es mejor dejar a un lado los paralelismos facilones y aprovechar la inevitable efeméride para comprender mejor lo que pasó entonces. Porque resulta difícil exagerar la importancia de aquella lucha, que transformó por completo el mundo.…  Seguir leyendo »

EL 23 de octubre de 2013, miércoles, Luis Alberto de Cuenca no quiso ver conmigo el partido entre el Real Madrid y «la» Juventus, Fase de Grupos de la Copa de Europa (Champions League, para los menos fogueados), porque, me dijo, tenía que entregar ya la nota de introducción a su libro Cuaderno de vacaciones, un volumen editado por Visor –acaba de salir– que recoge los poemas escritos por Luis Alberto durante sus veraneos de 2009 a 2012. At a checkpoint on a dirt road in southeastern Afghanistan in 2012, Rahim Sarobi, a farmer, braked to a stop behind a knot of idling cars. Up ahead, Afghan gunmen were piled into the back of a Toyota Hilux. On the ground, tied to the rear fender by their wrists, lay two bloodied men, laboring to breathe.

Everyone was ordered out of their vehicles. The burly checkpoint commander, known simply as Azizullah, said the unfortunate pair had not slowed sufficiently at the checkpoint, and only the Taliban don’t slow down. Derechos lingüísticos en Cataluña

¿Alguien se imagina que en Gales o en Escocia todos los alumnos de educación infantil no recibieran ni una hora en inglés, solo dos en primaria y tres en secundaria? pues bien, eso es lo que ocurre en Cataluña: los alumnos toman todas las clases en catalán su primeros años escolares –a veces introducen alguna hora de inglés pero jamás ninguna en español–; y el resto de su educación obligatoria todas en catalán excepto dos o tres en español y en inglés, pese a que la lengua de la mayoría de la población catalana es el español.

Según el Instituto de Estadística de Cataluña (2008), el 55% de la población tiene el español como lengua materna; el 31,6% el catalán; el 3,8 ambas y el 9,6 restante, otras lenguas.…  Seguir leyendo »

Since 2011, Egypt’s police force and other governmental authorities, overwhelmed by political upheaval, have let their protection of the country’s thousands of archaeological sites and museums fall to a bare minimum. Looters have taken full advantage of this opportunity.

More than a thousand objects were stolen from the Malawi National Museum in Minya last year and satellite photographs show some 10,000 hastily dug looting pits cratering the country’s archaeological sites. In some places, more organized gangs of looters have used dynamite and bulldozers to uncover and steal antiquities under the protection of guards armed with automatic weapons.

In response, the Egyptian government has attempted to stanch the flow of antiquities to the United States, which has some of the highest demand for these artifacts.…  Seguir leyendo »

Tres hechos, dos de ellos recientes, me impulsan a escribir este artículo. Tres hechos que muestran, a mi juicio, el miedo que siente la clase dirigente española -incluida, claro está, la clase política- a afrontar debidamente el llamado problema catalán, que no es de hecho tal, sino el problema español de la estructura territorial del Estado o, dicho más claramente, el problema del reparto del poder político. Un miedo que se manifiesta en una triple actitud: miedo a reconocer explícitamente la existencia del problema, miedo a plantearlo en sus justos términos y miedo a resolverlo debidamente.

Miedo a reconocerlo. El pasado lunes día 20 se produjo una singular coincidencia televisiva: el debate entre los cinco candidatos a presidir la Comisión Europea y el debate entre Elena Valenciano y Miguel Arias Cañete, cabezas de cartel del PSOE y del PP.…  Seguir leyendo »

No exactamente. Porque en la protesta que se ha manifestado en las elecciones europeas convergen distintas expresiones políticas, algunas contradictorias entre ellas. Además, conservadores y socialistas, con 423 diputados sobre 751, continúan dominando conjuntamente la Eurocámara. Pero lo significativo es que esa dominación es conjunta, situándose como garantes de estabilidad a costa de aparecer ante los ciudadanos como paladines de inmovilidad, difuminando diferencias en método y contenido de construcción de Europa. Y es precisamente el rechazo a la Europa realmente existente lo que unifica la protesta social que irrumpe en un Parlamento con más competencias que nunca y con menos consenso que nunca.…  Seguir leyendo »

“Dos puntitos nada más”. Así valoraba el indescriptible Duran Lleida la victoria de Esquerra Republicana sobre Convergència i Unió, ese partido en régimen de concubinato que, aseguran, gobierna en Catalunya. Les habían sobrepasado en “dos puntitos nada más”, como si se tratara de Antonio Machín y aquellas dos gardenias con las que se quería decir “te quiero, te adoro, mi vida”.

La capacidad de nuestra casta política -expresión que llevo utilizando desde hace veinte años- para mentir, o lo que es lo mismo, para hacer como si no se entera, es de tal envergadura que yo propondría una encuesta tan sencilla como saber si existe algún político que le merece confianza.…  Seguir leyendo »

Les nouveaux pouvoirs du Parlement de Strasbourg ne sont qu'une illusion. La feuille de route de l'Union européenne est déjà établie par la précédente Commission. Commission et Parlement ne feront qu'exécuter ce programme.

Les abstentionnistes sont majoritaires dans toute l’Europe et partout les scores des partis protestataires progressent. Pourtant, à entendre les commentateurs français, ce sont des maux bien français qui expliqueraient ces résultats. Sans vouloir minimiser les explications nationales, ne faut-il pas aussi s’interroger sur les causes européennes ? Pourquoi un tel désaveu, presque partout ? Et pourquoi l’Allemagne seule y échappe-t-elle – et encore… ?

Les électeurs allemands ont de quoi être majoritairement satisfaits d’une Europe qui leur offre une prospérité sans précédent, un taux de chômage au plus bas, et une influence sans partage sur les décisions communautaires.…  Seguir leyendo »

After the presidential elections there's a subdued air about Cairo. Flag-sellers wave their leftovers at passing traffic: half-price flags, but nobody stops. In the Tahrir wilderness, unrecognisable now from the swirling, buzzing, gallant place it was three years ago, a man stands alone at the edge of the central island. He is old and silent, and he carries a banner with a picture of the new president and the legend: "Congratulations Egypt!"

How terrible is it to be born a girl in the world today? The almost daily headlines about another cruel act of violence and discrimination against women -- from the kidnapping of nearly 300 school girls in Nigeria last month, to the latest gruesome stoning of a woman in Pakistan -- provide plenty of reasons to be pessimistic about women's equality and safety in today's world.

The recent case of "misogynist extremism" in California, where a young man killed six people in "retribution" for all the girls who had rejected him, underscores the fact that all societies suffer from violence against women.…  Seguir leyendo »

African soccer fans always seem to have a story about where they were when the Ghanaian national team came achingly close to qualifying for the semifinal stage of the 2010 World Cup, which was held for the first time on African soil.

No African team had ever made it past the quarterfinal round of the world’s most-watched sporting event. And in Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium that July 2, Ghana came within a hair’s breadth of making history, before crashing out in controversial circumstances when a Uruguayan player’s outstretched arm stopped a near-certain Ghana goal as the clock ticked down.

Thailand’s Army Tears Up the Script

There is a script for Thai coups: a day or two of shock and awe, seizure of television stations, token tanks on the streets — and then swift international reassurance, a plausible interim prime minister, an appointed national assembly, a committee to draft a new constitution and promises to hold elections within a year.

The 2006 coup followed the script almost perfectly, but still ended in farce: The influence of the ousted prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, was far from removed; indeed, pro-Thaksin parties won the first post-coup election, and the one after that.

The leaders of the May 22 coup are not sticking to the 1991 or 2006 scripts.…  Seguir leyendo »

The outcome of the recent European Parliament elections is described in press and political circles in Europe and North America as a shock or crisis, but the actual reaction is better named hysteria, as if “Europe” is all over, and the rise of the right in these elections resembles the rise of fascism in the 1930s — all of which is sheer nonsense.

What this vote has done is contribute 150 anti-”Europe” members to a parliamentary body numbering 751 seats in total, which has very little power over the functions of the European Union executive — the appointed Commission and the Council (the governing body, composed of ministers from member-governments, under a rotating presidency).…  Seguir leyendo »
