Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate.

This utterly appalling statement murmured by Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios was directed at Stanislas Wawrinka during their Rogers Cup match on Wednesday. On-court microphones recorded Kyrgios making the lewd and disparaging comment with reference to Stan Wawrinka’s girlfriend Donna Vekic, the Croatian tennis player and women’s world No. 129.

The media has been swift to identify these comments as a critical example of sledging, an extremely topical psychological strategy made famous within the sport of cricket, which can help a player gain an advantage by verbally launching an attack on an opposing athlete.…  Seguir leyendo »

La finalidad de la fiesta tradicional era crear sentido, encantar, honrar a los dioses y a los santos, conmemorar el aniversario de grandes acontecimientos que habían marcado la historia del pueblo, del grupo o de la familia; tenía una utilidad ritual y simbólica fuerte. En la fiesta tradicional todo el mundo participaba, en la de hoy sólo hay espectadores.

Las fiestas uniformes de antaño dan lugar hoy a las diferencias individuales y a la vivencia de las contradicciones del individuo consigo mismo. Al fallar los encuadramientos colectivos tradicionales, cada uno inventa su fiesta. Todas las formas se vuelven legítimas para abrir el camino a la pluralización subjetiva.…  Seguir leyendo »

Nueva estructura de Google

Cuando, hace unas semanas, conocí a Larry Page, cofundador de Google, en la conferencia de la empresa para programadores, me presenté como autor del libro Y Google, ¿cómo lo haría? Page sonrió y me dijo: "¿Cómo lo haría Google? Quiero saberlo".

La verdad es que Larry Page no sabe qué es lo que hará Alphabet, su rebautizada empresa. Y en eso precisamente consiste el cambio. Esta reestructuración permite a Page, a Sergey Brin —fundador junto con él— y a su empresa librarse de las ataduras de su pasado y crear nuevos Google que todavía no han imaginado.

Para el mundo de las finanzas, los medios de comunicación, los reguladores gubernamentales y la competencia, Google seguía siendo solo un buscador.…  Seguir leyendo »

¿Qué es más políticamente incorrecto, el sexismo o la xenofobia? Se supone que ambos. Sin embargo, como acabamos de ver, el populista Donald Trump sólo ha comenzado a tener problemas en su candidatura a la presidencia de Estados Unidos cuando hizo comentarios misóginos. Mientras se limitaba a sacudir a los inmigrantes mexicanos, su popularidad no dejó de subir. ¿Por qué ahora sí y antes no? Mi tesis es que en Occidente el principio moral que nos obliga a tratar a todas las personas, con independencia de su origen, raza o condición, como iguales a todos los efectos, ha dejado de ser un tabú.…  Seguir leyendo »

Amnesty International recently adopted a proposal that recommends decriminalizing the sex trade, a move that it says is for the human rights and equal protections of sex workers. This proposal instead gives amnesty to pimps, brothel owners and sex buyers by recognizing everyone in sex work as “consenting adults”. Men and women in the vulnerable position of selling their bodies for sex should be offered services and solutions to provide them with safe alternatives.

The proposal instead legalizes their exploitation. Amnesty International says that people who engage in sex work often do so because they have been marginalized and have limited choices.…  Seguir leyendo »

My experience as defense secretary during the Iran hostage crisis more than three decades ago tells me that Iran will probably try to circumvent the nuclear deal. My participation in nuclear weapons negotiations with the Soviet Union from 1958 through SALT II in the 1970s — during very hot points in the Cold War — reinforces my caution. Yet the United States can only accept or reject the deal, so let me discuss bottom-line pros and cons.

Iran’s nuclear program, its advance suspended during the negotiations, is but two years from a nuclear weapon. That’s an urgent problem demanding immediate attention.…  Seguir leyendo »

Pasado hace ya el sofocón griego –no me refiero al clima– y recordando aquella interminable noche de negociaciones del 12 al 13 de julio, es tiempo de que los europeos nos preocupemos de lamernos las heridas, que yo creo han sido hondas, y de que calibremos cómo han quedado las cosas. No sé si los resultados han sido buenos, porque ese es asunto que no aciertan a presagiar ni siquiera los economistas de relumbrón. Pero, al menos, hemos incorporado palabras nuevas al diccionario europeo, como «Grexit» (la salida de Grecia del euro) o «diktat» (el ordeno y mando de Berlín). Parecían desde luego las dos ideas rampantes en esa noche de domingo a lunes y, en cierto modo, aún siguen escritas en el menú principal del merendero europeo.…  Seguir leyendo »

Si no fuera por las numerosas calles que llevan su nombre, el almirante gallego Casto Méndez Núñez estaría hoy tan olvidado como la pequeña y absurda guerra que consagró su heroísmo. Esa guerrita, que unos llaman del Pacífico y otros Hispano-Sudamericana, fue la consecuencia de una cadena de conflictos diplomáticos menores y desembocó en 1866 en el bombardeo del puerto peruano de El Callao, en el que el propio Méndez Núñez resultó herido. El episodio, recreado por Benito Pérez Galdós en uno de sus Episodios nacionales, fue solemne motivo de inspiración para pintores de cuadros históricos, que por entonces estaban muy en boga.…  Seguir leyendo »

Brazil’s Vigilante Lynchings

Last month, a man was beaten to death by a mob after being accused of trying to rob a bar in São Luís do Maranhão, in northern Brazil. The man, Cleidenilson Pereira da Silva, was stripped naked by the crowd, tied to a pole, kicked, punched and hit with stones and bottles. He died at the scene.

At least 20 people took part in the lynching, which was not the only one in Brazil that month. A few days after that attack, a man in metropolitan Belo Horizonte was dragged through the street by a mob and fatally beaten with a piece of wood for allegedly stealing a cellphone.…  Seguir leyendo »

The High Price of Rejecting the Iran Deal

The Iran nuclear deal offers a long-term solution to one of the most urgent threats of our time. Without this deal, Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, would be less than 90 days away from having enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb. This deal greatly reduces the threat of Iran’s nuclear program, making Iran’s breakout time four times as long, securing unprecedented access to ensure that we will know if Iran cheats and giving us the leverage to hold it to its commitments.

Those calling on Congress to scrap the deal argue that the United States could have gotten a better deal, and still could, if we unilaterally ramped up existing sanctions, enough to force Iran to dismantle its entire nuclear program or even alter the character of its regime wholesale.…  Seguir leyendo »

The world is facing the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, a staggering 60 million people displaced from their homes, four million from Syria alone. World leaders have abdicated their responsibility for this unlucky population, around half of whom are children.

The situation is sadly reminiscent of that of refugees fleeing the destruction of World War II and the Nazi onslaught. Then, too, most governments turned their backs, and millions who were trapped perished.

We are mired in a set of myopic, stingy and cruel policies. The few global institutions dedicated to supporting this population are starved of resources as governments either haven’t funded them or have reneged on their pledges of funds.…  Seguir leyendo »
