Justin Wilson, my friend, my colleague, the man with whom I first stood on top of an IndyCar podium, is dead. His death last month was preventable. We in the racing industry had the technology and ability to prevent his death and we chose not to.

In the 1950s, our engineering capabilities were such that racing cars would destruct on impact. They became cages of flaming death. The cars had no seatbelts and open cockpits, since a driver’s best hope for survival in a crash was a prayer to be thrown clear of the wreckage.

Sri Lanka’s War Crimes Controversy

Earlier this month, the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights released its long-awaited investigation into alleged crimes during Sri Lanka’s civil war. The conflict, which began in 1983 and lasted nearly three decades, pitted the Sri Lankan government against various ethnic Tamil rebels, most prominent the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which were fighting for the creation of a separate state in the country’s north and east.

The 272-page report makes for grim reading. Focusing on alleged abuses committed by both sides between 2002 and 2011, it documents numerous crimes, including unlawful killings and sexual violence, especially at the hands of the military during the last phase of the war in 2009, under the administration of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.…  Seguir leyendo »

Nine months after Fadi, a refugee from Homs, Syria, landed in Cyprus on a boat carrying some 340 smuggled refugees, he still had not applied for asylum. He chose instead to attempt to reach mainland Europe by any means possible.

Fadi’s reluctance to plant roots in Cyprus, the European Union country closest to Syria, stems from Cyprus’ policy preventing most of those granted asylum from bringing their family members to join them.

For Fadi, who made the journey to Cyprus without his wife and 3-year-old son, the “right to family reunification” was important enough that he continued via “illegal ways,” he said, to Sweden, where he was granted refugee status in August.…  Seguir leyendo »

Hundreds of thousands of Volkswagen diesel cars on the road in the United States with "defeat devices" are spewing 10 to 40 times the allowed amount of nitrogen oxide into the air — and will never be repaired. Because most recalls are optional, many owners won't bother to comply.

From 2000 to 2008, the Government Accountability Office found on average that about 30% of defects were not fixed within 18 months of a recall. For some recalls, the failure-to-fix rate rose above 70%.

Volkswagen diesel owners are particularly likely to forgo repair of the emission problem because the solution will actually reduce their cars' fuel efficiency.…  Seguir leyendo »

La farsa continúa. Y también las mentiras. Poco después de las diez de la noche subió Oriol Junqueras al estrado del Borne para decir que el independentismo había ganado en escaños y en votos. Y lo cierto es que en aquel momento el independentismo perdía, como ha acabado perdiendo, la elecciones catalanas en porcentaje y número de votos. Solo una ley electoral dislocada permite que esa derrota por la mínima se traduzca, sin embargo, en una cómoda victoria en escaños. Y a través de una injusta distribución parlamentaria impide visualizar la descarnada división de Cataluña en dos mitades, que tiene incluso su correspondencia geográfica entre Barcelona y el resto de provincias catalanas.…  Seguir leyendo »

En estos momentos que vivimos, inmersos en nuevos procesos políticos llenos de interrogantes, viene a mi memoria lo que los mayores solían decirnos cuando éramos niños: “preguntar es de mala educación”. Un consejo, este, que también hoy se repite y que muchos convierten después en regla de conducta. Hoy, 28 de septiembre, se conmemora el Día Internacional del Derecho a Saber, una celebración que nació en 2002, cuando, reunidos en la ciudad de Sofía los representantes de las principales organizaciones no gubernamentales, fijaron esta fecha para recordar en el mundo la aparición de un nuevo derecho que permitiría a los ciudadanos ser más partícipes de lo público.…  Seguir leyendo »

La iniciativa del Grupo Parlamentario Popular para reformar la Ley Orgánica del Tribunal Constitucional es una decisión política grave y bastante disparatada. Si se declarara la independencia y hubiera una actuación subsiguiente del Gobierno catalán, la respuesta ha de ser política y para eso está el artículo 155 de la Constitución que prevé que el Gobierno, con autorización del Senado, adopte las medidas necesarias para que una comunidad autónoma cumpla sus obligaciones constitucionales. Este artículo es un buen precepto porque sitúa el conflicto en el ámbito que le corresponde: debe ser el Gobierno, con autorización del Senado, el que afronte una declaración de independencia.…  Seguir leyendo »

Españoles, a las urnas cuanto antes

Si a cualquier analista le hubieran dicho hace solo un par de años que el electorado catalán iba a designar una mayoría independentista en su parlamento dispuesta a reclamar la secesión inmediata del Estado, probablemente hubiera respondido con el escepticismo y la desgana que el propio presidente del Gobierno ha evidenciado al respecto hasta hace muy pocos meses. En realidad ha sido frecuente el comentario por parte de los soberanistas moderados y de los catalanes opuestos a la llamada desconexión en el sentido de que al final no va a pasar nada. Probablemente se referían a que no habrá violencia en las calles ni los castellanohablantes se van a ver discriminados, por lo menos no de momento, pero eso no significa que nada pase.…  Seguir leyendo »

Al cabo de tres años de agitación paroxística de la teología de la emancipación y de la mitología del destino manifiesto, los independentistas en su conjunto han perdido escaños respecto a 2012 y han obtenido menos del 50 por 100 de los votos. A la ViaLliure a la República Catalana le falta firmeza y aglomerado; su consistencia es poco más que retórica. Así sería también si la opción secesionista hubiese alcanzado la mayoría absoluta en sufragios porque el artificio del nacionalismo propaga como presunta realidad jurídica lo que no es más que una creencia sentimental y una falacia política: que el pueblo catalán constituye un sujeto soberano.…  Seguir leyendo »

La reciente Ley Orgánica 7/2015, de modificación de la Ley Orgánica del Poder Judicial (LOPJ), publicada el pasado 21 de julio, viene a reformar de manera radical el paradigma casacional del orden contencioso administrativo regulado hasta ahora, una verdadera revolución que, tomando como modelo el writ of certiorari norteamericano, va a suponer un giro copernicano de los criterios de admisibilidad y accesibilidad a la vía casacional que durante décadas han estado vigentes en nuestro ordenamiento jurídico. En este sentido, el elemento estructural del nuevo panorama casacional será la objetivación de la naturaleza del recurso, abandonando su finalidad reparadora de intereses y derechos subjetivos, para mutar en un remedio básicamente dirigido a la creación de jurisprudencia.…  Seguir leyendo »

Du côté occidental, l’on prédit l’éclatement de la prochaine bulle du fait de la spéculation effrénée qui affecte les start-up de la Silicon Valley et le marché immobilier de Manhattan. Comme en 2008, les tremblements de terre annoncés ne manqueront pas de faire sentir leur onde de choc dans l’Union européenne, en particulier dans les pays économiquement les plus vulnérables, en premier lieu la Grèce.

Après des semaines dramatiques à négocier une sortie de la crise grecque, le résultat des courses est désastreux: les créanciers de la dette publique grecque ont imposé à la population un nouveau plan d’austérité drastique.…  Seguir leyendo »

Growth brings prosperity, and prosperity brings peace. These are the sorts of words you will hear often as the world's leaders gather in New York for the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting this month. And they are true. But as the United Nations marks its 70th anniversary this year, it is worth taking a step back and considering how these words apply to the real world, and real people's lives.

When CNN asked me to share my personal perspective about what development and prosperity means in the real world, and how my country sees this issue more generally, I recalled my visit to Cote d'Ivoire last year, where Japan has been helping to improve basic literacy education for women, as well as vocational training facilities for in-demand skills like needlework.…  Seguir leyendo »

On September 14, local media reported that an appeals court and Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence of Ali al-Nimr for participating in protests four years ago. He was 16 at the time. Today, he awaits the execution of his sentence, which stipulates that al-Nimr should be beheaded and that his headless body should be strung up for public display.

Among the "crimes" for which al-Nimr was convicted were "breaking allegiance with the ruler," "going out to a number of marches, demonstrations, and gatherings against the state and repeating some chants against the state," and using his cell phone to incite demonstrations.…  Seguir leyendo »

I've seen for myself the devastating human impact of tragedies like Thursday's stampede in Saudi Arabia, which claimed the lives of more than 700 people and injured 900 others. Back in 2013, I was one of a team implementing an electronic medical surveillance system during a major mass gathering at the Kumbh Mela, a HIndu pilgrimage in India. There, I witnessed the aftermath of a stampede as pilgrims rushed to get on a train at the city station. A confluence of factors, including a last-minute change of the arrival platform, large and impatient crowds, a narrow footbridge, and general panic led to 36 people losing their lives, with many more injured.…  Seguir leyendo »
