For the uninitiated, it is difficult to understand what’s wresting Venezuela apart. For the past year, a convoluted political confrontation – the product of the hardening and mutually exclusive interests held by the government of president Nicolas Maduro and the political opposition – has been roiling on.

With tensions so high and angry, hungry citizens struggling to get by, the Vatican recently launched mesas de discusion, mediated discussions between the two sides.

Given the myriad, deep-set and long-held conflicts facing this country that make dialogue nearly impossible, I fear the proposed talks will make little progress.

Empathy is sometimes used to mean the sharing of others’ feelings. But it has another important meaning: the skill of grasping what others think, feel and perceive. Empathy is not only active listening, but the practice of imagining or inferring other people’s mindsets, emotions and perspectives.

This is what Donald Trump and >Brexit campaigners did so brilliantly. They empathized with a large block of voters, gauged how they were thinking and feeling, and then exploited this for their political ends.

In both the US and UK a range of social and economic grievances has left voters feeling unjustly treated and neglected by what they see as self-serving political elites.…  Seguir leyendo »

Much remains uncertain about President-elect Donald Trump’s foreign policy. But the future of the multilateral nuclear accord with Iran is in grave doubt given his campaign rhetoric and the enthusiasm of his first appointees for regime change in Tehran. It might now be up to the co-signatories – China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom – to take action to save it.

The agreement has been a success so far. More than a year after going into force, the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), negotiated between Iran and the E3+3 (France, Germany, and the UK, plus China, Russia, and the United States) has effectively and verifiably blocked all potential pathways for Tehran to race toward nuclear weapons.…  Seguir leyendo »

Confieso que me resulta tremendamente doloroso analizar el contenido del acuerdo de gobierno alcanzado entre el Partido Socialista de Euskadi y el Partido Nacionalista Vasco. No porque no resultara previsible que el deterioro del socialismo en España pudiera caer tan bajo, sino porque una nunca está preparada para aceptar que no haya servido para nada todo el dolor, toda la lucha lucha, todo el sufrimiento de tanta buenísima gente que defendió desde Euskadi la España plural y democrática.…  Seguir leyendo »

Cinco años después de su muerte, Javier Pradera ha seguido echando raíces inverosímiles en el subsuelo de la democracia española. Las puso hacia 1963 cuando desmontó en La mitología falangista el engrudo de mentiras y emociones del fascismo que mamó en su propia casa (y en casa de su primera mujer, Gabriela, hija de Rafael Sánchez-Mazas). Las hincó algo más cuando tomó distancias del estalinismo congénito al PCE en el que militaba con Semprún y Claudín, y dejó de hacerlo en 1965, meses después de la expulsión de ambos (y los formidables papeles están en Camarada Javier Pradera, de Santos Juliá).…  Seguir leyendo »

Conmemoramos hoy el Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer porque, desgraciadamente, al menos una vez al año debemos dar este aldabonazo contra lo que sigue siendo una auténtica pandemia global. Naciones Unidas considera que el 70% de las mujeres sufren violencia en su vida. Ejercida de muchas maneras: física (con un insoportable corolario de muertes que no cesa), psíquica (con no menos insoportables vejaciones hasta la destrucción de la mujer), social (imponiendo falaces estereotipos), laboral (impactando en los salarios y las oportunidades), educativa (ahogando la futura igualdad real). Todo lo que discrimina es violento, porque desconfigura el proyecto vital de una persona.…  Seguir leyendo »

"Noticia no es que el perro muerda al hombre, sino que el hombre muerda al perro”, reza un viejo tópico periodístico. El inconveniente de algunos dichos es que confunden más por tópicos que por viejos. Quizá la simpleza contribuyó a que durante mucho tiempo pasasen inadvertidas ciertas noticias. Unas tristes e infectas noticias en las que los perros mordían a las mujeres. A veces afloró la desatención informativa, contribuyendo a normalizar ignominiosas prácticas que eran cualquier cosa… menos normales. En ocasiones brotó un tratamiento informativo desenfocado: cuando la cobertura se circunscribía a la vertiente sensacionalista y sanguinolenta; o cuando la sevicia machista se revestía de engañosos aderezos como “ataque de celos”, “crimen pasional” y ufanos vecinos que atestiguaban lo “muy educado y muy correcto” que era el maltratador.…  Seguir leyendo »

America’s first illegal-alien amnesty wasn’t the biggest in our history, but it was the most influential, since we’re still talking about it.

The beneficiaries had shown a certain reckless courage in immigrating here, and a high degree of presumption. They entered without permission or papers, ignorant of local laws and customs. They didn’t learn the language, and they kept to themselves.

That they were undocumented didn’t bother them, so firmly did they believe that no human being is illegal. Like so many Americans, they sanctified their own arrival, blessed their own immigration story above others. La primera amnistía estadounidense que se otorgó a migrantes ilegales no fue la más grande de la historia de Estados Unidos, pero sin duda fue la más influyente pues aún hablamos de ella.

Los beneficiarios mostraron cierta osadía y un alto grado de arrogancia al migrar a este lugar. Entraron sin permiso ni documentos, sin conocimiento de las leyes y costumbres locales; no aprendieron el idioma y se mantuvieron distantes.

Que no tuvieran documentos no les molestaba, pues creían firmemente en que ningún ser humano es ilegal. Como muchos estadounidenses, santificaron su llegada y bendijeron su propia historia de migración por encima de todas las demás.…  Seguir leyendo »

It seems almost certain that US President-elect Donald Trump will walk away from the Paris climate agreement next year.

In the absence of US leadership, the question is: who will step up?

Sadly this is not a new question, and history offers some important lessons. In 2001 the world faced a similar dilemma. After former vice-president Al Gore lost the 2000 election to George W. Bush, the newly inaugurated president walked away from the Kyoto Protocol, the previous global pact to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Cómo potenciar la inteligencia

Acabo de publicar un libro titulado Cinco consejos para potenciar la inteligencia, en el que explico eso, cómo potenciar la inteligencia. La palabra inteligencia hospeda muchos significados. Inteligencia es capacidad de síntesis. También saber distinguir lo accesorio de lo fundamental. Es la capacidad para captar la realidad en su complejidad y en sus conexiones. Pero hoy debemos hablar de inteligencias en plural, pues son muchas las modalidades y a menudo entre ellas se llevan a la gresca.

¿Cuáles son los tipos que existen? Los mencionaré de pasada, para que el lector tenga una visión panorámica: teórica, práctica, social, analítica, sintética, creativa, discursiva, emocional, auxiliar (que es de la que se ocupa mi libro), matemática, científica, artificial, fenicia, espontánea, provocada… e inteligencia para la vida.…  Seguir leyendo »

NATO has a big problem. And it's not President-elect Donald Trump. In the end, the alliance knows how to talk to him and it knows how to influence the security apparatus that sits round any president. No, the real challenge for NATO can be summed up in one word: Brexit.

It's not that Brexit in any way weakens the commitment of British politicians to NATO. Far from it. They have been vehemently -- and sincerely -- committing to continued defense cooperation. Populismos falacias y espejismos

Toda historia parece ser cíclica y agitada, además, por una dialéctica política disruptiva. Estamos viviendo un precocinado cambio revolucionario. El mal llamado mundo libre o cautivo se ancla en un cosmos ciber-espacial donde todo parece medido y predeterminado de antemano. El brexit y el trumpismo nos han demostrado que no. A veces, la cifra oculta estadística irrumpe como voluntad popular mayoritaria. Es voraz como un tsunami y es el estandarte, contra todo pronóstico, de un pueblo desamparado bramando, al unísono, por una nueva sociedad.

No esperaba que partidos populistas alcanzasen el vigor que tienen intramuros de la Unión Europea. Lo que sí es innegable es que en el depauperado sur campa -mayormente de la mano de la crisis económica- un populismo de izquierdas: Syriza en Grecia, y Podemos serían su claro ejemplo.…  Seguir leyendo »

Le Parlement européen a donc demandé jeudi le gel des négociations d’adhésion de la Turquie à l’UE – en cours depuis onze ans – en raison de la répression «disproportionnée» après le coup d’Etat avorté de juillet. Cette requête a provoqué la colère d’Ankara. Mais une colère «diplomatique», presque feinte, car pour le président Recep Tayyip Erdogan, les députés de Strasbourg peuvent «toujours causer», relève «Courrier international».

Le «sultan» surfe en réalité sur le fait que ce vote n’est pas contraignant. A ce sujet, «L’Express» a interrogé la députée européenne Sylvie Guillaume, du groupe Socialistes et démocrates, pour qui «le Parlement se devait d’envoyer un signe clair, un signe fort, après la grave dérive répressive du pouvoir turc».…  Seguir leyendo »

Le Venezuela est en train de vivre l’une des crises sociales, économiques, politiques les plus terribles qu’ait connue un pays de l’Amérique latine au cours des trente dernières années. Les données statistiques concernant les morts violentes, la santé publique et l’état nutritionnel de la population sont les mêmes, voire sont pires que ceux de certains pays en guerre dans le monde. Reconnaître cette situation relève ainsi plus d’une responsabilité morale que d’un positionnement idéologique.

Le pays, une entreprise en faillite

Tentons de comprendre ce qui fait la singularité de cette crise. La création par le président Hugo Chavez en 2003 d’une bureaucratie étatique contrôlant à la fois les prix et les importations a engendré toute une série de mécanismes qui incitent hauts fonctionnaires et sous-traitants à la corruption et à la malversation des fonds publics.…  Seguir leyendo »
