The Italian referendum and close-shave Austrian election are symptoms of a continent that may be teetering on the brink of political disintegration. It’s just possible that an empire may be collapsing before our eyes, as the Habsburg and Ottoman empires did before it, in or around the same neighbourhood.

With the rise of nationalist parties in Italy, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Britain, the possibility that the Brussels union has fomented, rather than suppressed, nationalism can no longer be dismissed. The Habsburg empire, which also tried to make a whole out of linguistically and culturally diverse parts, and ended in a war sparked by Serbian nationalism, is an unhappy precedent.…  Seguir leyendo »

Nelson Mandela once wrote that “there is no passion to be found playing small — in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” It is almost as if Mandela had Fidel Castro in mind when he wrote those words.

There is no in-between space where Castro can be ignored or dismissed. He was either loved or loathed. To his enemies, he was a dictator. But to South Africans who suffered under apartheid, he was a beacon of freedom.

The bonds between Castro and Mandela, between the Cuban and the South African people, go back to the late 1950s.…  Seguir leyendo »

Nelson Mandela una vez escribió que “no hay pasión en apostarle a lo pequeño… en conformarse con una vida que es menos de lo que eres capaz de vivir”. Es casi como si hubiese tenido a Fidel Castro en mente cuando escribió esas palabras.

Castro no puede ignorarse o descartarse. Era amado y odiado. Para sus enemigos, era un dictador. Pero para los sudafricanos que sufrieron bajo el apartheid, fue un modelo de libertad.

Los lazos entre Castro y Mandela, entre los cubanos y los sudafricanos, datan de finales de los cincuenta.

En 1956, el régimen apartheid procesó a 156 líderes activistas, entre ellos Mandela, de todos los estratos sociales y cada rincón del país bajo cargos de alta traición por movilizarse pacíficamente contra el gobierno de la minoría blanca.…  Seguir leyendo »
