The Russian occupation of eastern Ukraine produced one very hot summer. Through August, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe recorded between 1,000 and 1,500 nightly cease-fire violations, a large majority committed by Russian-led forces. Ukrainian soldiers and civilians continue to be killed or injured on a daily basis. While the attacks have tailed off since Labor Day, Moscow this month teed up a huge military exercise in western Russia, Belarus and Kaliningrad that stoked fears of an even broader assault.

Since invading Ukraine three and a half years ago, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has mastered the tactical rheostat, turning up the heat at will, then cooling things down when the United States and Europe push back.…  Seguir leyendo »

Can an 11-Year-Old Girl Consent to Sex

Last Tuesday, France woke up to news reports that a 28-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl had had “consensual” sex.

The events, first reported by the website Mediapart, took place on April 24 in the Paris suburb of Montmagny. That afternoon, the child followed a man, who had already approached her twice in the previous days, telling her he “could teach her how to kiss and more.” They went to his building, where she performed oral sex in the hallway. Then she followed him to his apartment, where they had sexual intercourse. Afterward, he told her not to talk to anybody about it, kissed her on the forehead and asked to see her again.…  Seguir leyendo »

El diccionario y la mujer

Haga usted un experimento: busque una palabra no solamente en un diccionario, sino en muchos distintos. Lo que hallará lo sorprenderá.

Yo mismo lo hice hace poco. Le seguí la pista a la palabra mujer, que —no hace falta decir— está sobrecargada de significado. Desarrollé este experimento en orden regresivo, del diccionario más usado en la actualidad al más polvoriento.

Primero fui al Diccionario de la Lengua Española, que es algo así como un instrumento evangelizador en el mundo hispánico. La edición a la que acudí es de 2001. Dice, entre otras cosas, que mujer es una “persona del sexo femenino”.…  Seguir leyendo »
