Not long after midnight, the crowd of thousands began to sense that something historic was taking place. They had gathered on a vast lawn to watch the election results roll in through the night, and the mood was cheerful and relaxed. Here, in Petaling Jaya, a heavily residential city that blends into Kuala Lumpur, support for the opposition party, Pakatan Harapan, the Alliance of Hope, runs high, and as P.H.’s tally began to outstrip that of Barisan Nasional, the ruling party, everyone present began to contemplate the unthinkable: the end of the only government Malaysia has ever known.

The July 2015 nuclear deal officially ended Iran’s isolation and economic punishment, but the comprehensive sanctions that the country had endured for nearly a decade continued to take a toll.

Those sanctions have profoundly damaged the Iranian economy. The government — hemmed in by domestic opposition and its own corruption — has done little to repair it. There have been encouraging signs of life since the nuclear deal, but they turned out to be short-lived.

President Trump announced on Tuesday that he would withdraw from the nuclear agreement and reinstate sanctions that had been lifted as part of it. This is not just a potentially fatal blow to the accord between Iran and five world powers.…  Seguir leyendo »

Podría parecer mezquino de mi parte, pero desde hace un buen tiempo me molestan esos hombres de barba canosa con mallas negras ajustadas: esos sexagenarios o septuagenarios fanáticos del ejercicio que presumen los miles de kilómetros que han recorrido en sus carísimas bicicletas. Detrás de mis muecas, por supuesto, ha habido un juicio moral: el de que estos hombres, que ya pasan la mediana edad y son entusiastas del ejercicio, son casos evidentes del autocuidado moderno que está fuera de control. Mi veredicto está sustentado pero, sinceramente, estos superciclistas que envejecen no me molestarían tanto si no fuera porque me da una envidia terrible que gente de mi edad, e incluso mayor, siga experimentando la emoción de llevar su cuerpo al límite.…  Seguir leyendo »

La Argentina otra vez en su tormenta. Crecen las olas, el viento ruge, el mar se encrespa y ahora, entre las olas, hay un monstruo, ese que los argentinos nos acostumbramos a pensar como la fuente de todas las desgracias: el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI). Después de doce años sin Fondo, el FMI vuelve a la política argentina llamado por un gobierno que muchos acusaban de trabajar para ese tipo de instituciones y que se pasó dos años intentando desmentirlo, antes de caer en su propia caricatura.
