Seguir leyendo »

Protesters deploy a giant European flag in Warsaw on June 26. (Wojtek Radwanski/AFP/Getty Images)

The right-wing Polish government is continuously breaking new ground in its attacks on democracy and the rule of law. But now it has set a truly astonishing precedent. Warsaw has just used its European Union powers to deport a government critic and banned her from entering any country within the European free movement zone. The implications are ominous – and not only for Poland.

Lyudmyla Kozlovska, a young Ukrainian human rights defender, is a fervent promoter of democratic Poland. Since she left her home country for Poland a decade ago, she has put considerable effort into promoting the model of Polish democracy to emerging countries through the Open Dialog Foundation, her Warsaw-based think tank.…  Seguir leyendo »

Supporters of Juan Requesens, a Venezuelan lawmaker accused of plotting against President Nicolás Maduro, gathered at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Caracas, on Aug. 10. (Miguel Gutierrez/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock)

Venezuelans have every reason to doubt the events surrounding the mysterious “assassination” attempt against President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas on Aug. 4. The regime distorts reality every day, even refusing to recognize and address the economic and social collapse it has created.

But whether you believe the official version or not, there’s no question that it has served as a heaven-sent excuse to further crack down on civil liberties and the opposition.

A mere three days after the alleged attack, Juan Requesens, a 29-year-old member of the National Assembly, was dragged out of his home by masked men. At the end of the building security tape, you can see one of the men pointing the camera toward a wall to hide their actions.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

On 20 August, the Greek government is scheduled to exit its IMF bailout programme, ending a series of three programmes that have run continuously since 2010. The Greek programme was the largest, most high-profile and most politically controversial in a series of post-global financial crisis bailouts of EU member states organized by the so-called ‘troika’ consisting of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF.

Politically, the course of action taken by the troika has been seen as controversial at best. The Greek economy has now suffered the longest recession of any advanced capitalist economy, overtaking the slump suffered by the US during the Great Depression in 1929.…  Seguir leyendo »

Munir Uz Zaman/AFP/Getty Images Photojournalist Shahidul Alam arriving for a court appearance following his arrest after a student protest, Dhaka, August 6, 2018

The renowned photojournalist Shahidul Alam is supposed to be in New York on October 28 to receive a humanitarian award from the Lucie Foundation, which honors photographers every year. Alam is a worthy recipient. His career goes back to the mid-1980s when he returned from Britain to his native Bangladesh with a doctorate in chemistry and, noticing his home in political turmoil, decided to record the democratic struggle to end General Hussain Muhammad Ershad’s autocratic rule with a camera.

Through his lens, he went on to capture the human drama around him—children growing up in poverty but displaying joy and resilience across the country; human rights defenders fighting for minorities, including the Chakmas and the stateless Rohingyas being driven out of Myanmar; and the spirit of Bangladeshi lives confronting great adversities—working in brick kilns, in garment factories, in makeshift ship-breaking facilities along the coast.…  Seguir leyendo »

Christopher Furlong/Getty Images A Campaign Against Antisemitism protester outside the Labour Party headquarters, London, April 8, 2018

Earlier this week, I got a direct message from a US columnist I’ve worked with in the past. It read: “Has Labour lost its mind? Was the party always this anti-Semitic or is it just blind fealty to Corbyn? Everything about his support within the party is bewildering to me.” Well, quite.

Almost simultaneously, The New Yorker published Sam Knight’s latest letter from London, which was his take on “Jeremy Corbyn’s Anti-Semitism Crisis”—though, as luck would have it, the magazine must have gone to press just before the latest convulsion in that crisis, which occurred last Friday when The Daily Mail published photographs of Corbyn in 2014, the year before he became Labour Party leader, apparently involved in a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial in Tunis for members of the Palestinian Black September terrorist group that carried out the infamous 1972 attack on the Israeli Olympic team in Munich.…  Seguir leyendo »

I often use a handy metaphor to explain to my students how feminists have historically differed among themselves in their approaches to bringing about change in patriarchal institutions. Some feminists seek a place at the table; others want to reset the table. The former hope to promote gradual progress from within an existing framework of norms and organizational structures; the latter demand nothing less than radical, wholesale reform.

When it comes to the Roman Catholic Church, I have always been a “place at the table” kind of feminist. When asked how to integrate women more fully into the life of the church, I offer reasonable strategies.…  Seguir leyendo »

When Imran Khan is sworn in as the prime minister of Pakistan on Saturday, he will be confronted by daunting challenges.

The country has a balance-of-payments crisis. The judiciary is in a hyperactivist mood. The effects of climate change are being keenly felt, with a major water-supply crisis. Hard-won gains against a decade-long terrorist campaign have to be consolidated.

Many Pakistanis, including senior military officials, blame an incompetent and venal political class for Pakistan’s chronic problems, from economic vulnerabilities to anxieties about security. They have been yearning for a messiah-like figure who can turn Pakistan into a financially autonomous and militarily robust nation that is respected globally.…  Seguir leyendo »

To Live and Die in Paris

In June, I got an email from a Frenchwoman I know. I’ll call her Hélène.

“I am now embarked on a fascinating trip as I will no longer be around at the end of the summer. I am serene and ready. I would be happy to share some thoughts on death if you could come and see me. Pick a nice day, we’ll chat in the garden.”

Hélène is a teacher in her 70s whom I’d met a few years earlier when she invited me to speak to her class. She became a friendly informant on French culture, with a distinctly Parisian way of sounding familiar, then suddenly saying something altogether foreign.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »
