From starving children in Yemen to bombed-out hospitals in Syria, today’s media offers many images depicting the impacts of conflict on health. Where conflicts occur, international and local aid workers rush to treat the wounded and assist with essential food supplies and vaccinations.

However, many people in humanitarian crises also suffer and die from chronic diseases, which now account for 7 in 10 of all deaths worldwide. Conflicts contaminate the air and water, reduce access to nutritious food and create stressful living conditions. This makes people sicker and more susceptible to chronic illness. Chinese leaders do like their slogans, and where foreign policy is concerned there are two that have reflected Beijing’s thinking in recent years. The first is tao guang yang hui, usually rendered into English as ‘hide your light and bide your time’, which guided Chinese policy for decades from the 1980s when Deng Xiaoping first established it as a principle of caution in foreign affairs. In late 2013, though, a new slogan was coined by President Xi Jinping to define a more assertive, muscular approach to foreign policy: fen fa you wei or, as it is commonly translated, ‘strive for achievement’.…  Seguir leyendo »

Es de noche, y un muchacho vestido de azul y de amarillo llora sentado en el cordón de la vereda —en el bordillo de la acera—, la cara hundida entre las manos. Su equipo acaba de perder una final en un estadio madrileño. El muchacho mira a la cámara y le habla:

—Se murió mi mejor amigo el año pasado y ni ahí sentí tanto dolor.

Dice, y yo no puedo soportarlo. Lo entendí, como suelo, un poco tarde: “Me gusta el fútbol”, pensé, “pero hay momentos en que no me gusta que me guste”. Fue el efecto final de aquellos días intensos.…  Seguir leyendo »
