"Se entiende por campaña electoral (...) el conjunto de actividades lícitas llevadas a cabo por los candidatos (...) en orden a la captación de sufragios.".

Tras esa aséptica definición de campaña que expresa nuestra ley electoral (art. 50.4 de la Loreg), se echa en falta un consejo: y por favor, que sea en voz baja, será mejor. Porque ruido, casi sólo ruido, es lo que nos ofrece esta campaña electoral. Un ruido que viene ya de demasiado tiempo atrás, como si una sala se hubiera ido llenando primero de murmullos, luego de voces, y por fin de una algarabía insoportable. Nadie evitó ese crescendo del ruido cuando se pudo evitar, luego ya fue irrefrenable.…  Seguir leyendo »

El hombre moderno, sin certezas y sin creencias, se siente desprotegido porque tiene la sensación de estar viviendo una comedia sin desenlace y porque desconfía de que la vida tenga sentido. Ante esta situación se pregunta ¿quién fue Jesús, qué habrá hecho para que hasta el día de hoy haya habido tanta gente que le haya amado y haya dado la vida por él?, ¿cómo entendió su vida, dónde está la fuerza de su persona y su originalidad, por qué, a pesar de que las ideologías y las religiones están sumidas en una profunda crisis, hay tantos ciudadanos que siguen afectos a su persona y a su mensaje?…  Seguir leyendo »

Hay dos tipos de indecisos en estas elecciones: el que desea que quien gobierne tenga una agenda social que le ponga una boca de metro a la entrada de su casa, y el que se mueve por valores menos personales como que no se pacte con golpistas. Ahora bien, al indeciso estas posibilidades u otras parecidas le producen un agotador baile de ideas, pero esta vez amenizado por las maracas de Tezanos. El desconcierto es grande porque si en el bipartidismo pocas veces se cumplía lo esperado, imagínense ahora cuando nuestro Congreso se ha convertido en un zoológico con especímenes de toda laya.…  Seguir leyendo »

Protesto por su situación de penuria y sufrimiento frente a un mundo indiferente e insolidario, hedonista y consumista que, más que buscar soluciones, quiere desconocer a las victimas de los problemas que hemos causado los mayores, pésimos albaceas de la generación que apenas inicia su vida.

Protesto por todos los niños y por cada niño, por nuestros niños. En primer lugar por los que ni siquiera tienen la oportunidad de vivir y son victimas de aborto, o como dicen eufemísticamente ahora, por la interrupción del embarazo, forma cínica, despreciable y criminal de acabar con una vida.

Protesto por la irresponsabilidad paterna que condena al abandono, o al menos a una vida familiar hemipléjica y matriarcal a tantos niños, evidenciado que el machismo, en el fondo, no es sino una manifestación de padrotes de ocasión.…  Seguir leyendo »

This has been a grim month for Egyptians who seek a better life and believe in dignity and freedom.

First, on April 9, there was President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi’s visit to the White House, where he received a warm welcome from his U.S. counterpart. President Trump uttered only a few hollow compliments about the situation in Egypt; he made no mention of Sissi’s dismal human rights record. Then, on April 16, the tame parliament in Cairo approved amendments to the constitution that could allow Sissi to remain in office until 2030.

According to statements by two senior judicial officials, the amendments would give Sissi complete authority over the judiciary and institutionalize the military’s dominance over political life.…  Seguir leyendo »

The fire that gutted the roof of the Notre Dame Cathedral this week nearly destroyed a building that had stood since the Middle Ages and had come to embody the soul of Paris and perhaps France itself. The speed with which massive donations were offered toward rebuilding the 856-year-old icon is a testament to its importance. It took less than two days to raise nearly $1 billion of the estimated $1.13 billion to $2.3 billion it will take to fix the church, with much of the money coming from French business leaders and ordinary worshipers.

President Emmanuel Macron also said he wants the cathedral rebuilt within five years, noting that France had in the past seen many towns, ports and churches go up in flames and rebuilt them each time.…  Seguir leyendo »

Every year the nearly 400 billion trees in the Amazon rain forest and all the creatures that depend on them are drenched in seven feet of rain — four times the annual rainfall in London. This deluge is partly due to geographical serendipity. Intense equatorial sunlight speeds the evaporation of water from sea and land to sky, trade winds bring moisture from the ocean, and bordering mountains force incoming air to rise, cool and condense. Rain forests happen where it happens to rain.

Los colombianos somos hijos de dos mitos: la lealtad a la familia y el querer ser de Miami. Y nuestro presidente Iván Duque los expresa muy bien. Obediencia debida a su inflexible padre Álvaro Uribe, simpatía juguetona con su chistoso tío Donald Trump.

En toda familia siempre hay un hijo sonso, pero con suerte. Y en la familia colombiana ese es nuestro presidente Duque. Un hombre sin atributos con buena suerte (o mala, tal vez) que llegó a ser presidente y se ha convertido en la oda a la nada. The president of Ukraine has primary responsibility for managing national security and foreign relations. But ahead of the first round of the presidential election on 31 March, candidates mainly exchanged views on issues that are the responsibility of the government not the president: anti-corruption measures, gas prices and social benefits.

The focus on domestic issues reflects the fact that there is broad consensus in society on Ukraine’s foreign policy orientation. To this extent, President Petro Poroshenko is a victim of his success. After 2014, he was instrumental in building international support for Ukraine.

This led to the IMF’s stabilization package and the rapid implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.…  Seguir leyendo »

The prevailing assumption outside Russia is that an ordered and stable succession is in prospect when Vladimir Putin leaves the presidency in May 2024, with his replacement being a person of the same stamp. This is however questionable.

Those close to the Kremlin are aging, like Putin. None of them has a glimmer of independent authority within the ruling cabal, not even Igor Sechin, for all his personal ties to Putin and his links to Russia’s security services. None enjoy significant public trust.

Putin’s power would wane once a potential successor (almost certainly a man) began to acquire an aura of presidential favour, however provisionally.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LNA) led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive on the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on 3 April.  The offensive soon lost momentum as forces in western Libya nominally-aligned to the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) rallied to prevent the advance of Haftar’s forces. Significant reinforcements have been despatched from across the country, raising the prospect of a protracted period of fighting – everyone involved has few incentives to back down and many incentives to avoid failure.

If the fighting drags on, the LNA’s revenue generation model may be its undoing.

Securing the necessary funding for the LNA’s operations has been key to Haftar’s success and the sustainability of his effort to establish security and a military governing authority across territories under LNA control.…  Seguir leyendo »
