En la batalla por imponer un relato y un lenguaje, la estrategia de la defensa en el llamado juicio del procés ha resucitado una vieja contraposición (falsa) entre democracia y Estado de derecho. Ellos (los separatistas) estarían del lado de la democracia, los otros (los malvados españolistas) utilizarían la ley y los jueces como instrumentos totalitarios para ahogar la voz del pueblo. La democracia estaría por encima de jueces y leyes (salvo las suyas, claro).

Se trata de un discurso falaz, pero que han comprado (en ocasiones a buen precio) algunas personas y medios, claramente desinformados, fuera de nuestras fronteras. Lo más sorprendente es que numerosos actores constitucionalistas hayan entrado en ese terreno, sin cuestionar el paradigma de base: ¿realmente es más democrático el separatismo?…  Seguir leyendo »

Goodness, we are bored with it. Bored, exhausted, sick to the back teeth. Louder grow the voices arguing that we simply need a resolution, whatever that may be. Last week various figures speaking for business said that we needed to crack on and do something — anything.…  Seguir leyendo »

It often seems to be completely forgotten that NATO, which celebrates its 70th anniversary on 4 April, was a British initiative. Specifically, the idea came from Ernest Bevin, the foreign secretary in the radical Labour government of Clement Attlee.

In a speech in the House of Commons in January 1948, Bevin called for a ‘Western Union’ that would provide the security on which the reconstruction of Europe depended. Over the next 14 months, he turned his vision into a reality in a series of carefully calibrated steps. Though of course the crucial element was the US security guarantee to Europe, it is doubtful whether it would have happened without Bevin’s creativity and tenacity.…  Seguir leyendo »

Toute contre-vérité est susceptible de rejoindre la réalité. Le document « Pour le respect des libertés et des droits fondamentaux en Catalogne », signé par 41 sénateurs français et publié le 24 mars sur le blog (hébergé par Mediapart) du sénateur des Hauts-de-Seine André Gattolin, le fait en déclarant qu’« en tant qu’Européens et en tant que Français nous nous sentons concernés par les événements graves qui se sont déroulés en Catalogne ». Effectivement, la crise catalane est un problème pour l’Europe, qui démontre une fois de plus à quel point la désinformation traverse les frontières. Son objectif est de créer une défiance à l’égard des institutions démocratiques et parmi des partenaires européens, comme une première étape vers la déstabilisation de tout projet européen.…  Seguir leyendo »
