Children peer out from behind the bars into the light, scarred by intense trauma and uncertain of their future, terrified both of their prison and the outside world. The images and stories of these youngsters, robbed of their childhood by the extreme violence of life under the Islamic State, are harrowing. Many are unaccompanied, the large majority are under 12. They now find themselves abandoned in appalling conditions in rudimentary camps in Syria. Governments have to do better: This is not the way to treat children who are also victims of terrorism. Nor is it effective counterterrorism policy.

Tens of thousands of men, women and children with an alleged connection to the Islamic State are currently held in camps in northeastern Syria.…  Seguir leyendo »

El Uruguay no es un país de extremos. Es una condición inusual en Latinoamérica, una región con múltiples crisis políticas y sociales y tentaciones autoritarias. En marzo, cuando asume el nuevo presidente, resguardar esa tradición de moderación y diálogo debe ser su mayor promesa.

Poco antes de que ganara Luis Lacalle Pou en una competida segunda vuelta, banderas de distintos colores y afiliaciones ondeaban en la rambla en Montevideo. En medio, con una bandera blanca, un joven gritaba: “No perdamos este país”. Esa imagen de optimismo, en el que políticos y ciudadanos han hecho un pacto de conciliación y avances progresistas sin importar el bando, nos llena de entusiasmo al resto de América Latina.…  Seguir leyendo »

For four decades, the rule of Iran’s Islamic Republic has rested on the pillars of redistributive social justice, foreign policy independence, Islam and a managed form of electoral legitimacy.  These pillars, each of equal importance, have served as guiding principles bolstering Iran’s domestic and foreign policy decisions.  Amid the latest round of protests to have gripped Iran, it is clear that these pillars are fracturing.

On 15 November at midnight, the Iranian government, in a move supported by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani, Speaker of the Parliament Ali Larijani and Head of the Judiciary Ebrahim Raisi, announced a 200 per cent increase in fuel prices – a redistributive measure designed to provide cash transfers to the population.…  Seguir leyendo »

Pour le téléphone, c’est Orange. Et je règle toutes ces factures par l’intermédiaire d’une branche locale de la Société générale.

Cet état de fait résulte d’un accord passé entre l’est et l’ouest de l’Europe. When the Norwegian Nobel Committee gives the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday, celebrations will be undercut by many expressions of disappointment and outrage. Local and international voices criticizing his domestic record attracted considerable media attention, while some took to opinion pages to develop their arguments further.

But Abiy's domestic record was not why he was awarded the prestigious prize. According to the committee, he was chosen for "his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea", resulting in a peace deal they hope "will help to bring about positive change for the entire populations of Ethiopia and Eritrea".…  Seguir leyendo »
