Lo primero que escuchamos sobre el COVID-19 fue la búsqueda de un culpable. De una sopa, de un murciélago, de un país. Antes de tomar conciencia de la magnitud del tema, de la prevención y los riesgos cercanos, apareció el odio y la necesidad de responsabilizar a alguien. La estructura no es nueva: cuando aparece un virus, se señala de inmediato a un responsable que no sea el hombre blanco y heteronormado.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday in Bostock v. Clayton County that workplace discrimination against LGBT individuals is illegal discrimination on “the basis of sex” under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The decision was written by Associate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch and won a 6-3 majority. The ruling was hailed by some as a major victory for LGBT rights specifically and for progressive causes more broadly.

Some commentators however were surprised that a ruling that might seem out of step with conservative values was written by a judge appointed by President Trump and was supported by a court where the majority of the justices were appointed by Republican presidents.…  Seguir leyendo »

On Monday, a court in Manila convicted Filipino American journalist Maria Ressa of something called “cyber libel.” Her case will have severe ramifications for press freedom not only in South Asia but around the world.

“Today a court in the Philippines became complicit in a sinister action to silence a journalist for exposing corruption and abuse,” Amal Clooney, Ressa’s London-based lawyer, said in a statement with co-counsel Caoilfhionn Gallagher. “This conviction is an affront to the rule of law, a stark warning to the press, and a blow to democracy in the Philippines.”

Clooney also called on the U.S. government to “take action to protect their citizen and the values of their Constitution.”…  Seguir leyendo »

President Trump declared a national emergency last Thursday — but it wasn’t about the covid-19 pandemic or police brutality or nationwide protests. Rather, the subject of the emergency declaration was the International Criminal Court, the body investigating the United States for suspected war crimes in Afghanistan.

Trump announced that the ICC represents an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.” The executive order pushes back by authorizing economic and diplomatic sanctions on ICC personnel working on the Afghanistan probe and anyone who helps them.

The Trump administration has consistently and directly opposed the ICC, in contrast to the more passive opposition or even ad hoc support from previous administrations.…  Seguir leyendo »

Le «monde d’après» se prépare dès maintenant. En ce printemps 2020, les tribunes ont germé dans la terre du confinement, et les initiatives fleurissent désormais à la lumière de notre «liberté» retrouvée: que ce soit le Conseil national de la nouvelle résistance, #NousLesPremiers ou la Convention du monde commun, pour n’en citer que quelques-unes, toutes se rejoignent dans un appel au renouveau démocratique et à des actions concrètes et convergentes. Partageons donc des méthodes, des propositions, et des solutions mûries depuis longtemps.

Nous sommes plus intelligents ensemble, en mettant en commun nos points de vue, nos expertises, nos désirs. Mais n’oublions pas que notre tâche sera d’abord de mener la bataille pour interpréter les causes de la crise et remettre en question la grille de lecture néolibérale qui cherchera, elle, à profiter du choc pour imposer de nouvelles mesures.…  Seguir leyendo »
