“Nosotros, los familiares, pedimos con clemencia que este hecho tan cruel a manos de nuestra supuesta seguridad nacional, de ninguna manera quede impune. El pastor Héctor Giménez, la cara más visible de los predicadores evangélicos de la televisión argentina, fue pionero entre sus pares de América Latina y el Caribe en subestimar el impacto del COVID-19 e instrumentar la crisis para hacer sus propios negocios. I had to take a long walk. I needed to get away from the headlines, especially the ones about the impending Israeli annexation of part of the West Bank.

For days, I had compulsively clicked every update about David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main coalition partner, Benny Gantz, to get them to agree on annexation. I read the leaked forecasts from Israeli generals that annexation could spark conflict in Gaza, the warnings from King Abdullah II of Jordan that it could destabilize the whole region, the precise argument from analyst Dahlia Scheindlin that annexation cracks the global order that prevents wars.…  Seguir leyendo »

Serbia finally held its parliamentary and local elections on June 21 — they were supposed to take place on April 26 but were postponed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. After convincingly winning the 2016 legislative and 2017 presidential elections, President Aleksander Vučić’s SNS party scored an even more impressive victory with more than 63 percent of the votes. This was one of Europe’s biggest landslides, with a 53-point difference with the party that came in second, its coalition partner SPS.

With the opposition boycotting the elections, the only other list to make it into parliament is the right-wing Patriotic Alliance.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Group of 20, a multilateral forum of major economies, announced on April 15 that it would suspend debt service payments from the world’s poorest countries. The International Monetary Fund did the same for 25 countries.

But more relief may be necessary, and China, the world’s largest bilateral lender, has come under particular scrutiny to do more. At a June 18 virtual conference with African leaders, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China would write off interest-free loans for “relevant African countries” and might extend the G-20-sponsored repayment moratorium.

This may not make much of a difference. Interest-free loans constitute only 2 to 3 percent of Chinese loans issued to Africa since 2000 and would have been the easiest for low-income countries to pay off.…  Seguir leyendo »

Atteinte hors norme portée par l’homme à l’équilibre de la planète, l’écocide concerne les dommages environnementaux les plus tragiques. Etymologiquement, le terme renvoie à la «destruction» de notre «maison» commune, la Terre. Conçu comme le crime le plus grave en matière d’atteinte à l’environnement, l’écocide se caractérise par un endommagement systématique et total d’un écosystème, par exemple du fait de son exploitation excessive. Il ne vise donc pas le quotidien du quidam, mais les activités industrielles de la multinationale.

Le concept d’écocide est apparu dans les années 70, à la suite du déversement par l’armée américaine de millions de litres d’agent orange sur la forêt vietnamienne, avec les conséquences désastreuses que l’on connaît pour les populations qui y ont été exposées.…  Seguir leyendo »
