Seguir leyendo »

Nothing says you are renouncing al Qaeda quite like appointing a member of al Qaeda to a top cabinet position in your new government.

The Taliban on Tuesday appointed Sirajuddin Haqqani to be Afghanistan's acting interior minister, a job analogous to running the United States Department of Homeland Security, with the FBI thrown in for good measure.

The United Nations in a report issued in June noted that Haqqani "is a member of the wider Al-Qaida leadership, but not of the Al-Qaida core leadership". (In 2011, Haqqani gave a rare interview to the BBC and was asked whether he had links to al Qaeda.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Taliban announced an “interim” cabinet on 7 September, their first step since taking power on 15 August toward forming a government and signalling how they intend to rule. The cabinet is filled with long-time key Taliban figures from their days as a government and later an insurgency, and it bears a strong resemblance to their former regime of the 1990s. The appointments will reassure the Taliban’s rank and file that their leadership remains unified and has not succumbed to pressure to show a more moderate face, but it will not be appreciated by many others. The roster does not reflect Afghan diversity, and it offers no olive branches to a wary international community.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Taliban Are Telling Us They Haven’t Changed at All

For weeks, the Taliban promised to unveil an “inclusive” government: one that would respect women’s rights, albeit within the confines of Shariah; represent different ethnicities; and bar terrorist groups from Afghanistan.

Then, on Tuesday, the Taliban announced the leadership of the caretaker government. It is all male and packed with veterans of the brutal Taliban regime of 1996 to 2001. The members are almost all Pashtun, the dominant ethnic group in the country. One is on the F.B.I.’s most-wanted list, four spent more than a decade in the Guantánamo Bay prison and most are under sanctions from the United Nations.

If there was a message that the movement, born in Pakistan’s madrasas nearly three decades ago, wanted to communicate, it appeared to be: We have not changed.…  Seguir leyendo »

Osama Bin-Laden’s masterminding of the US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in August 1998 saw more than 200 people killed – including a friend of mine – in nearly simultaneous truck bomb explosions linked to local supporters of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Al-Qaeda.

Living in Nairobi at the time, I had been in the embassy to collect a US visa a couple of days before the attack but my Kenyan friend was not so lucky and was killed. Both US embassies were badly damaged – in Nairobi, a memorial park was constructed on the site with a new embassy built elsewhere while Dar es Salaam got a new highly fortified embassy with a monument to the victims in its grounds.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

Twenty years ago, seven weeks after 9/11, I was the last journalist to interview Osama bin Laden. We met in Afghanistan, in the middle of the U.S. bombing campaign. Bin Laden boasted that he had laid a trap that would end up humiliating the United States in Afghanistan — just as had happened to the Soviet Union. He also predicted talks between the United States and the Taliban.

Two decades later bin Laden is dead, but those predictions have come true. And they weren’t the only ones that did.

Americans can find some small consolation, perhaps, in the fact that they managed to take revenge by hunting him down and killing him.…  Seguir leyendo »

I Wrote the Lead Times Article on 9/11. Here’s What Still Grips Me

Shortly after the attacks of Sept. 11, an English teacher in central Washington State assigned her eighth and ninth graders to write poems based on the lead article in The Times. The teacher, Tammy Grubb, said her intention was to give the students a way to process their feelings. The poems were posted in the school hallway and then, since my byline was on the article, Ms. Grubb sent them to me, 77 of them.

With the 20th anniversary of the attacks approaching, I dug up the thick folder with the poems. The format was “found poetry,” which basically means rearranging phrases from another text, and the words were painfully familiar: the “hellish storm of ash,” the planes “gorged with fuel,” the victims leaping from the inferno, the talk of war, the bravado of the moment, with President George W.…  Seguir leyendo »
