For more than a decade, Washington has struggled to prioritize what it calls great power competition with China — a contest for military and political dominance. President Biden has been working hard to make the pivot to Asia that his two predecessors never quite managed.

The landmark defense pact with Australia and Britain, AUKUS, that Mr. Biden announced this month is a major step to making that pivot a reality. Under the agreement, Australia will explore hosting U.S. bombers on its territory, gain access to advanced missiles and receive nuclear propulsion technology to power a new fleet of submarines.

On the surface, AUKUS provides a way to aid the deployment of advanced military hardware in Asia and draw a clearer line between countries standing with China and those standing against it.…  Seguir leyendo »

Los adoptados no deberían vivir con miedo a ser deportados

Cuando a Antonio LeBlanc, el desafortunado protagonista de la nueva película Blue Bayou, lo arrestan luego de una pelea con dos policías, confronta una terrible realidad: un agente teclea el nombre de LeBlanc en una computadora y descubre que no es ciudadano estadounidense, como había creído durante más de treinta años. El Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de Estados Unidos ha ordenado su deportación.

El personaje de LeBlanc, interpretado por Justin Chon, quien también escribió y dirigió la película, nació en Corea del Sur, fue adoptado por una pareja de Luisiana a los 3 años. Después creció, y fue víctima de abuso, en varios hogares temporales.…  Seguir leyendo »

Every society is full of cultural property of various kinds, and African societies are no exception. This cultural heritage is valuable in many different ways. It may be associated with a monetary value, especially today, but this does not detract from its other values – religious, historical and emotional, to name only those most difficult to convert into money. These values also vary over time. Today, Africans more readily value African art objects for decorative purposes, whereas they used to see them only for public places like palaces.
