El PP y la guerra de los botones

Desde los sesenta, sucesivas generaciones han podido contemplar hasta cinco versiones cinematográficas del clásico de la literatura francesa La guerra de los botones, amén de poderlo leer, claro. Escrita en la antesala de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la novela de Louis Pergaud narra la enconada rivalidad entre chavales de dos pueblos aledaños de la Francia rural que dirimen sus porfías con apedreos a mano o con tirachinas, así como con espadas de madera o palos sin desbastar, entre improperios a cuál más procaz. De pronto, se experimenta un giro inesperado cuando los contendientes deciden arrancar a sus prisioneros los botones de sus prendas para hacerles correr semidesnudos hacia sus casas, donde les aguardará un duro castigo al verlos hechos un cristo.…  Seguir leyendo »

Libertad para las drogas

El Partido Socialista, en el poder, y el Partido Popular, en la oposición, han fraguado una momentánea alianza en el Parlamento español para poner fin al cannabis que, parecía, iba a ser tolerado en España. Se han equivocado gravemente. Sólo conseguirán con esta prohibición que las mafias de narcotraficantes que pululan ya en España, aunque menos que en México y otros países latinoamericanos, se robustezcan y aumenten su ejercicio criminal, así como el consumo de drogas en el país.

Cuando fui candidato, en los años ochenta del siglo pasado, vivíamos en el Frente que me respaldaba la pasión del programa. Creíamos que jugaría un papel crucial en la elección y nos equivocamos en redondo: no jugó ninguno y la mayoría de electores ni siquiera lo leyó.…  Seguir leyendo »

La reforma laboral se ha convertido en una especie de pim pam pum de feria. Cuando hay un cambio político, uno de los mantras habituales es el de derogar la reforma laboral que haya hecho el anterior gobierno, de otro signo político. No se razona el porqué ni se analiza a fondo el qué. Tampoco se atiende a que el corpus legislativo a derogar haya dado buenos frutos, es decir, que haya sido positivo de cara al empleo. Simplemente se deroga porque los cambios legislativos hayan sido impulsados por un gobierno de signo contrario.

Tal inclinación a derogar lo propuesto por el contrario político sin mayores análisis es bastante irracional.…  Seguir leyendo »

Desde hace meses o incluso años, la inmensa mayoría de los españoles asiste ya no con la indignación propia de quien no descarta intentar cambiar las cosas, sino con hastío y cansancio, a la falta de rubor con la que tantos políticos se dedican a emponzoñar el debate público, abundando en lo que divide a los españoles y enterrando las posibilidades de concordia con la única finalidad de justificar insultos y descalificaciones al de enfrente.

A ese hartazgo se le suman, además, la incredulidad y el asombro ante la constatada facilidad con la que el bipartidismo puede insultarse de día y sentarse a repartirse instituciones a la hora de comer.…  Seguir leyendo »

Ciudadanos venía a cambiar las cosas, a hacer política de otra manera, a regenerar la actividad política, a devolver a los electores la confianza en las instituciones y en sus representantes, a templar el vaivén del bipartidismo, a dignificar la representación de los ciudadanos haciendo una política práctica, centrada sobre los acuerdos, la racionalidad y los valores de la democracia liberal. Desde Cs se supo transmitir esos objetivos y valores al electorado y éste los entendió. Más de cuatro millones de españoles respondieron en abril de 2019 con sus votos favorables, tan sólo hace dos años y medio.

Algunos dicen hoy que ese resultado no fue sociológicamente razonable para un partido liberal de centro en España.…  Seguir leyendo »

Estos versos de Raúl Rivero fueron leídos en la antigua sede del diario El Mundo el 10 de diciembre de 2003. Se celebraba la entrega de los segundos premios de periodismo José Luis López de Lacalle y Julio Fuentes. Los premiados en la categoría de columnistas no pudieron acudir. Ambos estaban encarcelados en sus países. El periodista marroquí Ali Lmrabet, en Rabat; el periodista cubano Raúl Rivero, en La Habana.

Entre el público asistente al acto, se encontraban los entonces candidatos a la presidencia del Gobierno español, Mariano Rajoy y José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.…  Seguir leyendo »

Por qué la educación física es clave para prevenir el acoso escolar

Los adolescentes que están bien integrados en su entorno, participan frecuentemente en actividades deportivas, mantienen buenas relaciones interpersonales y rechazan la violencia tienden a estar menos envueltos en fenómenos de acoso escolar.

Esta es la principal conclusión de un estudio que hemos elaborado en la Universidad de Córdoba entre un total de 1035 adolescentes de edades comprendidas entre los 12 y 17 años, pertenecientes a cuatro institutos andaluces.

A todos ellos les preguntamos sobre su conocimiento del acoso escolar, así como sobre su participación en actividades de educación física. Según nuestro análisis, la mejora de su autoestima, su competencia para la autorregulación de los problemas, parece ser relevante para encontrar estrategias para enfrentar los conflictos y evitar entrar en la dinámica de la violencia.…  Seguir leyendo »

It’s hard work maintaining the macho image of the Spanish man. But help is at hand in the shape of Barcelona’s new Centre for Plural Masculinities, which offers men the chance to cast off the machista straitjacket.

“This isn’t a place for men to come and beat themselves up for being bad men,” says Laura Pérez, the Barcelona councillor for feminism and LGBTI, who has overall responsibility for the project.

“It’s a place to talk about sexuality, without taboos, a place to explore masculinity. It’s all to do with how boys are educated to be men. Men have to be heroes, they’re not allowed to be afraid, boys don’t cry.…  Seguir leyendo »

Science is clear: climate change is unequivocal, and a result of human activity. The planet is already 1.1C warmer than pre-industrial levels and on a route to reach 2.5C or more this century, which could be catastrophic. The poorest and the most vulnerable populations will suffer more and earlier.

Climate change will bring droughts, floods, extreme temperatures and hurricanes that may become more intense and frequent overtime and impact billions of people. The rise of sea levels, lack of water and food, and regions becoming unfeasible to live may generate massive migrations in a planet already closing frontiers.

What has been the reaction to the coup over the past two weeks?

The Sudanese people have mobilised swiftly and peacefully against the 25 October coup, recalling the protests that toppled the dictator Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. Since the generals wrested full control of government from the civilian-military power-sharing arrangement made to oversee the post-Bashir transition, men and women in the capital Khartoum and other towns have taken to the streets, culminating in coordinated countrywide demonstrations numbering hundreds of thousands on 30 October. Many Sudanese workers are meanwhile striking, paralysing the country’s economy, though banks and key businesses such as pharmacies have occasionally reopened as organisers sought to ease the burden on the public.…  Seguir leyendo »

How do you tell people that they must leave their community or drown? This was the gut-wrenching decision I faced five years ago, as president of Liberia, when thousands of families in the capital’s largest township saw their homes swept out to sea.

Similar devastation stretches across Africa. Mozambique and Zimbabwe are still struggling to recover from the deadly Cyclone Idai that hit in 2019, and Madagascar is on the brink of famine. As weather patterns become more volatile, irregular rain is common, badly affecting crop and livestock yields. For a continent dependent on agriculture — it accounts for around one-fifth of sub-Saharan Africa’s economic output — the effects of climate change are especially ruinous.…  Seguir leyendo »

After two years of diplomatic deadlock, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed a new envoy for Western Sahara, a territory disputed between Morocco and the pro-independence Polisario Front, which represents the ethnic Sahrawi population of the territory. The recent designation of seasoned Italian-Swedish diplomat Staffan de Mistura marks a much-delayed and critical step forward in a standoff that, if left untreated, risks spreading instability elsewhere in the region.

What have we learned so far from COP26, the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change?

We have learned, sadly, that global leaders were right to lower expectations over the past few weeks. COP26 is not yet over, of course, but its opening days have provided plenty more evidence that governments are not going to do what is necessary to bring greenhouse gas emissions under control. Moreover, even if they can agree on how to do so in the remaining days, and then follow through with it, the effects of climate change are already here, as seen across the world in recent years with one heat record broken after another, as well as floods, droughts and other extreme weather.…  Seguir leyendo »
