El último informe del IPCC nos exhorta a pasar ya de las palabras a la acción

Esta semana se ha publicado la tercera parte del Sexto Informe de Evaluación del IPCC, que corresponde al Grupo de Trabajo III sobre mitigación. A partir de la evaluación de las bases físicas del cambio climático (Grupo de Trabajo I) y de su traducción a impactos físicos y a nuestra vulnerabilidad (Grupo de Trabajo II), estos expertos proponen las acciones más recomendables para reducir estos impactos.

Un informe de síntesis que llegará en septiembre unirá todos estos contenidos. Pero no hace falta esperar hasta entonces para saber lo que debemos hacer. Nos lo dice ya el documento que acaba de salir.…  Seguir leyendo »

“It’s the second month since Russia used all possible ammunition to shell the Luhansk region. Now they are gathering equipment, mobilising conscripts … The battle here [will] be the fiercest”, the governor of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Gaidai, told me when we met recently in eastern Ukraine.

Russia’s intentions are clear: the Kremlin calls its war against Ukraine the “special operation to free Donbas”. It wants some real gains to present at home before the anniversary of Russia’s victory in the second world war, on 9 May. After Russian troops failed to beat the Ukrainian military and occupy Kyiv and major towns such as Kharkiv, Moscow is concentrating on taking the parts of the Donbas that remain in Ukrainian hands.…  Seguir leyendo »

Los trabajadores voluntarios ataviados con trajes de protección blancos —a quienes se les conoce aquí como los “grandes blancos”— empacaron su equipo y se marcharon después cumplir con su labor del día. El complejo de apartamentos donde vivo se ha quedado en silencio una vez más. Desde mi ventana en el piso 18, alcanzo a ver los estanques koi y los jardines debajo, vacíos; el laberinto de setos, vacío; la fuente, inactiva de cierta forma, sus aguas están inmóviles como si conspiraran para suspender su danza.

Es el primer día de confinamiento en Puxi, nuestra mitad del lado oeste del río Huangpu en Shanghái, y acabamos de terminar nuestra primera ronda de pruebas covid patrocinadas por la ciudad.…  Seguir leyendo »

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published the third – and final – report in its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) triad on the state of climate change and the world’s response.

The first report, on climate science, was published in the run up to COP26 last year. The headline ‘Code Red for Humanity’ resonated across a world reeling from an unprecedented pandemic, wildfires and flooding across the affluent Global North.

But, just a few months later, amid the first days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the second report on adaptation barely registered with the media despite being called ‘an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership.’…  Seguir leyendo »
