With the swearing in of Ranil Wickremesinghe as Sri Lanka’s new president, the country briefly caught its breath after weeks of crisis, generated by public anger at the accelerating economic collapse and the severe hardship it is causing. The extraordinary events of July 9-15, when massive crowds occupied the presidential residence and offices and forced then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign and flee the country, were the culmination of months of island-wide protests under the banner of #GotaGoHome. The tremendous and unprecedented victory of a genuine people’s struggle – janatha aragalaya in Sinhala – paved the way for this week’s selection of Wickremesinghe by parliament.…  Seguir leyendo »

¿Qué tiene de malo que tus hijos sean competitivos?

Mi cliché de mamá más repetido es “No todo es una competencia”. Lo digo al menos una vez al día, cuando mis hijas hacen algo como jugar carreritas en la acera, empujándose entre sí. También es un refrán muy sonado cuando una de mis hijas dice que alguien de su salón es mejor en algo que ella (divisiones largas, basquetbol, ser más alta). Por lo general, añado que, si una habilidad les es importante y quieren mejorar, tienen que esforzarse. Mi esposo prefiere la expresión más poética: “La comparación es el ladrón de la alegría”.

Mis dos hijas hacen caso omiso de esas advertencias.…  Seguir leyendo »

I’m Ukraine’s Foreign Minister. Putin Must Be Stopped.

Russia, apparently, is ready for a cease-fire. The door to negotiations, the Kremlin’s spokesman said last week, has never been closed.

No one should be fooled. Whatever its officials may say, Russia remains focused on war and aims to ruin Ukraine and shatter the West. The sight of Odesa, hit by Russian missiles just hours after a deal was reached to allow grain exports from southern ports, should dispel any lingering naïveté. For Vladimir Putin, a cease-fire now would simply allow his depleted invasion forces to take a break before returning for further aggression.

The truth is simple: Mr. Putin will not stop until he is stopped.…  Seguir leyendo »
