Russia’s Retreat From Kherson Brings Ukraine One Step Closer to Victory

Even amid heavy shelling of their cities, the Ukrainian people are defiant. The savage destruction of the country’s electricity grid and indiscriminate violence against civilians have seemed to consolidate Western determination to support Ukraine “as long as it takes”. But many in Europe and in the United States, including a group of Democratic lawmakers who walked back their call for stepping up U.S. negotiations with the Kremlin, have begun to wonder how Russia’s war on Ukraine ends. Such conflicting signals are unfortunate because Ukraine has a very clear understanding of what victory will entail.

The Immensity of Seoul’s Sadness

In April 2014, South Koreans watched in horror as TV news showed live footage of a huge ferry tilting 50 to 60 degrees, sinking into the sea. Aboard were over 300 high school students on a school trip to Jeju Island, the country’s most popular resort. Initial reports said the students were all rescued, but it soon emerged that they were, in fact, still on the ship. The nation watched in real time — for two and a half hours — as the ship sank completely and disappeared from view. It would turn out that rescue efforts had been botched, and the captain and crew had escaped in lifeboats after telling the students and other passengers to stay put.…  Seguir leyendo »

Ese páramo desolado llamado el metaverso de Zuckerberg

¿Hacia dónde está yendo todo el dinero?

Meta, la corporación antes conocida como Facebook, ha invertido cantidades impresionantes de dinero en lo que llama “el metaverso”, el mundo paradisíaco de realidad virtual que para Mark Zuckerberg representa el futuro de las conexiones humanas.

Sin embargo, para mí, las preguntas más interesantes sobre el metaverso son menos sociológicas y más financieras. Cuando me puse el último visor de realidad virtual (RV) de la empresa, el Quest Pro de Meta, que cuesta 1500 dólares, y me lancé en paracaídas a Horizon Worlds, el parque temático virtual de Meta, no me quedé reflexionando sobre el futuro de la comunicación humana.…  Seguir leyendo »
