At the height of the refugee crisis two years ago, many Germans thought that Angela Merkel’s days as chancellor were numbered. Merkel’s open embrace of Syrian refugees upset the conservative wing of her own Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and fired up the far-right, anti-Muslim Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
Fast forward to Sept. 24, 2017, and the CDU lost millions of votes. But it remains Germany’s largest party, with Merkel at the head. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is not one for rabble-rousing. In 11 years as the leader of Germany, her speeches are usually sobering analyses of thorny political and economic dilemmas, using only her signature diamond-shaped hand gesture to punctuate her points.
But on Tuesday night, "Mutti" or "Mom," as she is affectionately called, made an impassioned plea to her party: "I have also asked you for a lot," she told the more than 1,000 members of her Christian Democratic Union gathered, "because the times have asked us for a lot. Perhaps it was inevitable that as Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, continued his authoritarian course, relations with his Western European neighbors would worsen. Unfortunately, he’s managing to ruin not just his own relationships with other governments, but also the Turkish-German community’s relationship with the rest of their country.

Sometime during the night of Sept. 4, 2015 — a year ago this weekend — Chancellor Angela Merkel made a simple, historic decision. Because she didn’t want to become responsible for violence and possibly death at her country’s border, she ordered the German government — and by extension, German society — to take in thousands of refugees who had been sent westward by Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban.

A teenager. An axe and a knife. A hand-painted Islamic State flag found in a room. The first major attack committed in Isis’s name on home soil was not what Germans have been bracing themselves for. We feared there would be clandestine cell structures, months of elaborate planning, and then havoc, like in Paris and Brussels. So what happened near the Bavarian town of Würzburg on Monday night when a young refugee severely injured four people and was shot dead by police, is by no means the worst-case scenario. But in terms of political impact, it was huge.

Depuis l’été dernier, la crise migratoire a renforcé la peur du terrorisme. Les craintes semblent malheureusement fondées. En effet, selon Interpol, Daech aurait mis la main sur 250 000 passeports vierges syriens et irakiens. Selon Patrick Calvar, chef de la DGSI, 500 terroristes seraient déjà entrés en France grâce à ce sésame. Selon Europol, 3000 à 5000 «djihadistes» se seraient infiltrés en Europe et prépareraient des actions terroristes isolées ou de groupes.
Pouvons-nous considérer que les mouvements migratoires sont la cause de la multiplication des actes terroristes? When I returned to Berlin recently after a few months away, a friend asked me to try a new Chinese restaurant in Kreuzberg, a hip multiethnic neighborhood in the city. “It’s close to the subway station Kottbusser Tor,” he texted. “But take a cab, otherwise it’s too dangerous.”
I would have thought he was joking, but he is not the type. I asked the cabdriver, a young man of Turkish origin. Had Kottbusser Tor suddenly become a no-go zone? To my shock, he replied, “Yes, now that all these people from North Africa are here it has become really dangerous.”
Last autumn, when Angela Merkel opened Germany’s borders to refugees, my wife and I decided we would be happy to have some of them stay with us in our Berlin apartment. Mostly they would come and stay for just one night, arriving late and leaving at dawn to register with the city authorities.
One night the voluntary organisation that placed refugees with German families called us after midnight and said it had a Moldovan who needed a rest. So we Googled Moldova. We were OK with Syrians coming for a sleepover. But what about Moroccans, Eritreans, or the citizens of former Soviet republics?… Seguir leyendo »

That might as well have been the catchphrase in Sunday’s regional elections in Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition suffered a crushing defeat. A budget surplus of 19 billion euros and the lowest unemployment rate in 25 years weren’t enough to keep the loyalty of voters in three states.
The 1 million asylum seekers who reached Germany in 2015 — and the prospect of a similar number arriving this year — turned these elections into a referendum on Merkel’s refugee policy.
The right-wing populist party, Alternative for Germany (AfD) burst into all three regional legislatures, winning not only a quarter of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, a rustbelt state in the former East Germany, but also 15 percent in wealthy Baden-Wuerttemberg, according to preliminary results.… Seguir leyendo »

El momento más patético de la película acontece cuando el oficial negro (interpretado por el excelente Samuel L. Fascinant résumé des jeux de fantasmes. Le « fait » en lui-même correspond on ne peut mieux au jeu d’images que l’Occidental se fait de l’« autre », le réfugié-immigré : angélisme, terreur, réactivation des peurs d’invasions barbares anciennes et base du binôme barbare-civilisé. El ataque masivo a mujeres la pasada Nochevieja en Colonia nos sitúa ante una trampa ideológica que no es fácil de eludir. Es evidente que las múltiples agresiones reclaman una condena total y absoluta. Del mismo modo que el conocimiento de las diferentes nacionalidades de los agresores ha alimentado la sombra de la xenofobia. Entre los sospechosos detenidos hay nueve argelinos, ocho marroquís, cinco iranís, cuatro sirios, dos alemanes, un iraquí, un serbio y un estadounidense. De ellos, 18 habían solicitado asilo. Son refugiados. Un ínfimo puñado de los cientos de miles que han llegado a Europa y por los que tantas voces han reclamado un trato digno.… Seguir leyendo »
A medida que se han conocido más detalles sobre las agresiones sexuales que decenas de mujeres sufrieron durante el de Fin de Año en Colonia, hay dos palabras que han surgido en los análisis de los medios internacionales: secretismo e histeria. Son, en ambos casos, conceptos que van en contra de la normalidad deseada en toda sociedad y sobre todo de la normalidad tal como se entiende en Alemania. El secretismo proviene de la policía, que durante los primeros días ocultó y minimizó los hechos, reduciéndolos casi a un efecto colateral de la fiesta. We still do not know exactly what went on at Cologne’s central station on New Year’s Eve. Police have recorded 379 allegations of violence, 40% of them sexual assaults, with two reports of rape. They have identified 31 suspects, who include at least two Germans, a Serb, an American and 18 asylum seekers from the Middle East and north Africa.
That’s all we know for sure. But the public still hasn’t recovered from the headlines last Monday saying that a crowd of 1,000 refugees had mobbed German women. Since then, some of us have been searching for a source whose testimony we can trust.… Seguir leyendo »
I recently read that criminality is on the rise in German towns that have accepted refugees. But it’s not the refugees who are responsible for this crime wave: Germans in these towns have been committing arson, damaging property and attacking refugees. In other words, Germans have been making their own worst fears come true. Often the fear of loss leads to the very loss we fear – a principle that holds true not only for jealous lovers but also, it seems, for those who turn to violence out of fear that the refugees will cost them their safety and peace.
The refugees haven’t even all been registered yet, but already they raise questions about who we are.… Seguir leyendo »
