Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

Years before he became the most expensive player in the world; before his Olympic gold medal; before the Eiffel Tower lit up with his name to greet his professional move from Barcelona to Paris, Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, the Brazilian forward known to the world simply as Neymar, faced his first public relations controversy.

The year was 2010, and Neymar, then 18, had shot to fame in Brazil after a sensational breakout season. During an interview for the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, in between a conversation about Disneyland and sports cars, he was asked if he had ever experienced racism.…  Seguir leyendo »

The story I’m about to tell you is shocking, especially if you are sitting anywhere in Europe, North America or even in most of Africa. But in the country it took place, it happens pretty much every day.

It is a about a gay black woman born in a favela in Brazil being gunned down in the streets of Rio de Janeiro after attending an event for women of color. It is also about a racist police force and state machine hellbent on shutting down dissent, especially if it comes from people with a darker hue.

It’s been a bit over a week since the murder of Marielle Franco, a popular councilwoman born in the sprawling Mare favela in the north of Rio de Janeiro.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

One Friday night last month, the electricity was off in the streets of Palmeirinha, a favela in Rio de Janeiro. Three black teenagers were joking around in front of their houses. One of them started to run and the others followed, laughing. At that moment, the police came out shooting. Chauan Jambre Cezário, 19 years old, was seriously wounded. Alan de Souza Lima, 15 years old, died on the site with a cellphone in his hands — he had caught everything on video, including his own last agonizing minutes.

According to an official report released the next day, the boys were shot after a confrontation with the police.…  Seguir leyendo »

Some time ago, Brazil's census takers asked people to describe their skin colour. Brazilians came up with 134 terms, including alva-rosada (white with pink highlights), branca-sardenta (white with brown spots), café com leite (coffee with milk), morena-canelada (cinammon-like brunette), polaca (Polish), quase-negra (almost black) and tostada (toasted). This often lighthearted poetry of self-description reflects a reality you see with your own eyes, especially in the poorer parts of Brazil's great cities.

Walking round the City of God, a poor housing estate just outside Rio de Janeiro - and the setting for the film of that name - I saw every possible tint and variety of facial feature, sometimes in the same household.…  Seguir leyendo »
