Este nuevo e histórico Gobierno de coalición que empieza a andar en estos días se define a sí mismo con tres señas de identidad: lucha contra la desigualdad, feminismo y ecologismo. Y comienza su andadura cuando se celebra el foro de Davos, que reúne a las personas y entidades más poderosas del mundo para hablar, entre otros temas, de desigualdad, cambio climático o feminismo.

Como cada año, coincidiendo con el foro de Davos, Oxfam Intermón lanza un informe, este año se titula: Tiempo para el cuidado y cuyo mensaje central es que el actual sistema económico, que ha generado una crisis de desigualdad extrema, se sostiene en parte al trabajo de cuidados no remunerado o mal remunerado que realizan principalmente las mujeres.…  Seguir leyendo »

Justin Trudeau, Canada's new Prime Minister, has made news for intentionally valuing diversity in the selection of his Cabinet. The historic Cabinet has an equal gender balance, and is ethnically diverse.

When asked to explain his gender parity promise, Trudeau replied, "Because it's 2015."

A simple and yet important answer that resonates with many of us committed to diversity and inclusion.

In parts of the U.N. system, senior leaders are taking a "parity pledge" to make a commitment not to speak on all-male panels. Aparna Mehrotra, a senior adviser at U.N. Women (with which I work) supports the pledge, and advocates for increased change.…  Seguir leyendo »

Growing up in Iowa, I was often judged solely on appearance. In stores, strangers would make karate-chop gestures at me, inspired by the popular TV series “Kung Fu.” When I played quarterback for my high school team, opponents were not above slamming me to the dirt and then piling on racial slurs.

These incidents embarrassed me and made me self-conscious. But they are trifling indignities compared with the discrimination that many people around the world face based solely on their sex, age, race or sexual orientation.

I raise this in light of the law Uganda enacted this week, which could imprison for life those convicted of homosexuality, and the increased violence against gays in Nigeria after an anti-gay law took effect there this year.…  Seguir leyendo »
