Like others who track Europe-wide racism, in the early days of the Israel-Hamas war I started asking why the EU was not doing more to coordinate urgent action to stem hate crimes and hate speech against European Muslims and Jews. The response has been slow, selective and fragmented. Last month, the European Commission very rightly called out the “extraordinary levels” of antisemitic incidents across Europe.

The European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) exemplifies this trend. Following Hamas’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, the European Commission’s cyber sheriff Thierry Breton sent a flurry of not-so-subtle letters to tech companies such as Meta, Google, TikTok, and X (formerly known as Twitter), inquiring about responses to unspecified hate speech, “terrorist content”, and “disinformation”, threatening significant fines for noncompliance. Since the video went viral of the brutal killing by a police officer of Nahel, a 17-year-old shot dead at point-blank range, the streets and housing estates of many poorer French neighbourhoods have been in a state of open revolt. “France faces George Floyd moment”, I read in the international media, as if we were suddenly waking up to the issue of racist police violence. This naive comparison itself reflects a denial of the systemic racist violence that for decades has been inherent to French policing.

El fundamento racista del PNV se constata leyendo a Sabino Arana, fundador del partido. Si en su día Xabier Arzallus, presidente del PNV, afirmó que «la cuestión de la sangre con el RH negativo confirma sólo que este pueblo antiguo tiene raíces propias, identificables desde la prehistoria como sostienen investigaciones de célebres genetistas»; si dijo eso sin inmutarse, bien puede decirse, inspirándose en Sabino Arana, sin recurrir a los «célebres genetistas» de Xabier Arzallus, que el ADN racista del PNV existe.… Seguir leyendo »

Abundaron entonces los distingos escolásticos sobre el ser y el existir, sobre la extensión y la no universalidad de ciertos predicados y en torno a otras especies más escurridizas. In 1968, four days before he was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his last Sunday sermon at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. It was entitled, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution”, and although King doesn’t say the word “woke”, he uses the concept as it was understood by many Black folks then, well before the term was co-opted by the political right to refer to any left-leaning policy that it wanted to condemn.

As the FIFA Men’s World Cup begins, Qatar is facing media scrutiny for the abuse and exploitation of migrant workers who built and delivered an estimated $220 billion of World Cup infrastructure—as well as discrimination against women and LGBT people. Qatari authorities are anxious to deflect attention from the country’s human rights record by claiming that the criticism is racist, because such criticism against a World Cup host is “unprecedented”. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the same, delivering a rambling speech on the eve of the World Cup.
Qatari authorities might be able to justifiably complain about lazy reporting on the Arab world, but the biggest criticism about Qatar is that this World Cup has been built on racial injustice—delivered at the cost of abuse and exploitation of low-paid migrant workers primarily from South Asia and Africa.… Seguir leyendo »
Notice how those terms don’t really work? They challenge our mental processing, in part because systems can’t be bigots and institutions can’t be prejudiced.
And so I offer a modest proposal, but an earnest one. How about revising our terms for “systemic racism”, “structural racism” and “institutional racism”?
The problem with these phrases is that systems, structures and institutions cannot be racist any more than they can be happy or sad. They can be made up of individuals who share these traits, or even have procedures that may engender them.
