This week, Libyan cease-fire talks brokered by Russia and Turkey addressed the country’s latest bout of conflict, which has claimed more than 2,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of Libyans. Negotiations took place between the Government of National Accord (GNA) and rival Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF).

Russia and Turkey’s involvement represented a change in international engagement with Libya’s conflict, as they asserted their leadership in the political process and attempted to sideline Western countries and the United Nations. It looked as if it was set to pay off. The prime minister of the GNA, Fayez Serraj, agreed to the deal, but commander of the LAAF, Khalifa Hifter, left Moscow without signing.…  Seguir leyendo »

While the attention of the West is largely focused on Russian efforts in Syria, Moscow has been strengthening its presence in other parts of the Middle East to fortify its position as a key international player. Notably, Russian involvement in the Libyan civil war has increased substantially since 2015. It provides political support and military assistance to General Khalifa Haftar, who controls the eastern part of Libya, and helped him to wreck the UN-led Libyan agreement of 2015 aimed at launching a reconciliation process. But Moscow is also involved in the diplomatic settlement of the conflict between the main factions – Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National Army and the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).…  Seguir leyendo »

Tema: El desarrollo de la guerra en Libia no se puede entender sin explicar los intereses y la posición política de Rusia respecto a este conflicto.

Resumen: Uno de los acontecimientos recientes más importantes que ha tenido lugar y que parece que influirá seriamente en las relaciones internacionales es la guerra en Libia. Los agentes exteriores más destacados están siendo países de la UE, EEUU y la OTAN. Mientras tanto, Rusia ha quedado desplazada a un segundo lugar, aunque su no imposición de veto en el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU y sus livianas críticas a la intervención extranjera en el país, no le restan cierto protagonismo.…  Seguir leyendo »
