En estos días hubo una noticia bomba: nos enteramos de que los muy ricos son muy ricos y quieren ser más ricos todavía y no piensan detenerse ante nada para serlo.

La noticia fue tapa de todos los diarios: un consorcio de periodistas contó que había accedido a más de 13 millones de archivos de Appleby, una vieja compañía financiera —Bermudas, 1898— especializada en offshore legal services. Lo cual podría traducirse como “servicios legales fuera de las costas” si no debiera traducirse como “servicios legales fuera de las leyes”.

La noticia, por supuesto, no es que existan esos refugios para el dinero gris: todos lo sabemos, aun si no sabemos bien cómo funcionan, porque su principal característica consiste en ocultarlo.…  Seguir leyendo »

The desperate inequality behind global tax dodging

Out of sight, a powerful industry has been developing since the 1980s in tax havens across the globe. By following the money, we can start to grasp the costs that these territories impose on the economies of other countries.

The data that offshore centres publish is far from comprehensive, and our system for measuring household wealth and multinationals’ profits has many weaknesses. But it is improving, and by analysing the data carefully, we can detect consistent patterns and dissipate some of the secrecy that has for decades surrounded the activities of tax havens.

Last month, the international law firm Appleby announced it had been the victim of a hacking and that information on its clients was in the hands of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the news gathering organization that broke the story of the Panama Papers in April 2016.

On Sunday, material from that hacking became public. The Paradise Papers exposed the hidden financial dealings of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Queen Elizabeth and the athletic apparel company Nike, among many others. As revelations about tax-dodging airplane purchases and secret Russian ownership in tech companies came to light, Appleby declared that it takes its clients’ confidentiality seriously and billed itself as “not the subject of a leak but of a serious criminal act.”…  Seguir leyendo »
