¿Quien no ha creído ver agua en la carretera en un caluroso día de verano? ¿O una imagen en 3-D cuando en realidad se trataba de un dibujo en una superficie plana? A veces nuestra ilusión óptica lleva a confundir lo que percibimos con la realidad.

Lo mismo sucede con la ilusión cognitiva o política. Un determinado acontecimiento, en función de la forma en que se desarrolle, nos puede llevar a formular interpretaciones erróneas de lo ocurrido.

A menudo estas percepciones vienen marcadas por asociaciones de ideas o vivencias previas. Pero, como analizó Robert Jervis en su obra Perception and Misperception in International Politics, publicada durante la Guerra Fría, la ilusión cognitiva que nos creamos, sea percepción o realidad, tiene una enorme influencia en el proceso de la toma de decisiones –y puede constituir incluso un factor fundamental de conflicto.…  Seguir leyendo »

The 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran this week will draw dignitaries and representatives from more than 100 countries — 35 heads of state, including Mohamed Morsi, the current chair of the movement and the first democratically elected president of Egypt, as well as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. For the next three years, Iran will serve as the chair of the movement, which was formed in 1961 to counterbalance the superpowers. In early August, Iran hosted a high-level meeting that included Russia on the crisis in Syria. The Nonaligned Movement’s much-heralded summit meeting next week in Tehran — featuring dozens of leaders from the developing world, including President Mohamed Morsi of Egypt and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, as well as the U.N. secretary general, Ban Ki-moon — will elevate Iran as the movement’s new president for three years and enhance Tehran’s regional and international clout.

Tehran wants to seize this opportunity to neutralize Western-imposed isolation over its nuclear efforts and to defend its program, which has been consistently supported at past Nonaligned Movement summits as well as by Nonaligned countries in the International Atomic Energy Agency.…  Seguir leyendo »
