The recent news from Venezuela has been troubling — and also far from surprising. As the Venezuelan economy continues to struggle and inflation pushes many of the most basic everyday needs out of reach of ordinary working people, President Nicolás Maduro has responded, not with a plan, but with a crackdown. It has included arresting Antonio Ledezma, the mayor of Caracas, and other opposition figures on questionable charges — to say nothing of the jailings of peaceful protesters.

Mr. Maduro’s attempts to deflect criticism by pointing to aggression from the United States and international meddling — even if they were rooted in fact — would do nothing to solve Venezuela’s problems.…  Seguir leyendo »

La democracia política sólo podrá enraizarse en América Latina cuando esté acompañada de la democracia económica y social. Estas tres, cuando aterrizan en el campo de las acciones concretas a nivel micro, sí pueden ser capaces de lograr crecimientos económicos sostenidos, eliminar los altos niveles de pobreza, desigualdades y exclusiones que enfrenta nuestra región.

El ruido de las calles y la impaciencia de los estómagos latinoamericanos exigen que, más allá del «chorreo» del crecimiento, estas democracias entreguen deliberadamente resultados tangibles para todos (empleo digno, salud y educación de calidad, etc.), comenzando con esos ciento diez millones de mujeres y hombres atrapados por el hambre, que en estos mismos momentos tratan de sobrevivir con menos de un dólar al día.…  Seguir leyendo »

Political democracy will take root in Latin America only when it is accompanied by economic and social democracy. Likewise, Latin Americans will be able to achieve sustained economic growth and eliminate extreme poverty only when our political systems are free and fair for all.

The ability of our citizens — all of them — to be heard is an integral part of this process. If freedom of speech is restricted in one of our countries, silence could spread to other nations, especially those with leaders who wish to be permanently flattered.

Today, the people of one of our sister nations, Venezuela, are in the streets confronting repression.…  Seguir leyendo »
