En la COP26, cumbre del clima celebrada en Glasgow, Iván Duque, el presidente de Colombia, desplegó todos sus encantos en una ofensiva para convencer al mundo de que es un defensor ambiental dispuesto a proteger los vastos bosques de su nación. El presidente se comprometió a lograr que Colombia alcance la neutralidad de carbono para 2050 y a que el 30 por ciento de las tierras y aguas del país sean áreas protegidas para el próximo año.

Por desgracia, en Colombia, líderes comunitarios y activistas ambientales que se han dedicado a proteger los bosques del país de la destrucción causada por empresas mineras, madereras y petroleras son víctimas de amenazas y mueren asesinados por grupos armados.…  Seguir leyendo »

Colombia Is the World’s Deadliest Place for Environmentalists

At the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, President Iván Duque of Colombia carried out a charm offensive to convince the world he is an environmental champion who would protect his nation’s vast forests. He promised Colombia would be carbon neutral by 2050 and that, by next year, 30 percent of the country’s land and waters would be protected areas.

But back in Colombia, armed gangs are threatening and murdering community leaders and environmental activists who have been trying to protect Colombia’s forest from destruction by mining, lumber and oil companies. When Vice President Mike Pence visits Egypt on Wednesday, he will follow in the footsteps of countless American officials who have stopped in Cairo to laud the “strategic partnership” between the United States and Egypt.

This has become a vacuous and badly outdated talking point — the kind we both drafted during our years in the government. Mr. Pence shouldn’t pay lip service to it.

American and Egyptian interests are increasingly divergent and the relationship now has far less common purpose than it once did. Mr. Pence should make clear to Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s president, that the two countries need a reset, beginning with a major reduction in American military assistance.…  Seguir leyendo »
