So here we are. The pound has slumped and Britain has the lowest growth and highest inflation in the G7. Manufacturing output has stalled and the financial markets are advising that sterling should be treated as an “emerging market” currency. The prime minister has broken the law and the government will reportedly soon publish a bill that could break international law in our name. You can only imagine the enormous respect and influence that Boris Johnson will carry into the room when G7 leaders meet in Germany. If they don’t burst out laughing at the sight of our threadbare prime minister it will only be because of decent diplomatic manners.…  Seguir leyendo »

I am lucky that in my life I knew Desmond Tutu, one of the greatest men of our time. This tiny giant, this impish little priest, had the dangerously insane courage of the gods. And it was through his God that he found the voice to unremittingly challenge oppressors and speak endlessly, eloquently for the beaten down, the trodden on, the innocent and poor of this world. And later, when the righteous justice of his rhetoric had come to pass, he – along with his great friend Nelson Mandela – proposed the national dignity that only forgiveness of the past and the vanquished can bestow.…  Seguir leyendo »

Necesitamos una revolución de los alimentos

En 1984 reuní a los músicos más exitosos del momento para formar una “superbanda” llamada Band Aid; el objetivo era recaudar dinero para aliviar el hambre en Etiopía. Al año siguiente se formó un grupo todavía más numeroso para Live Aid, un multitudinario concierto a beneficio que dio lugar a una iniciativa de obtención de fondos que todavía continúa. El mes pasado la Fundación Barilla celebró el Foro Internacional sobre Alimentos y Nutrición, durante el cual se destacó la necesidad permanente (y cada vez más urgente) de reforzar la seguridad alimentaria.

Vingt-cinq années se sont écoulées depuis les famines en Ethiopie dans les années 1980 et depuis le mouvement de générosité sans précédent et l'inquiétude que celles-ci ont déclenchés. La question que l'on me pose toujours bien sûr est de savoir si tout cela en valait la peine. Qu'est-ce qui a changé en Ethiopie et en Afrique dans l'ensemble ? Ma réponse est : beaucoup de choses - à la fois pour le meilleur et pour le pire.

La semaine dernière, j'étais de retour en Ethiopie, où l'évidence de ces deux types de changement s'impose. Sur le plan positif, la croissance économique a explosé : en effet, l'Ethiopie en 2010 devrait figurer parmi les cinq économies les plus dynamiques au monde.…  Seguir leyendo »
