Las tensiones con Rusia podrían dominar la inminente cumbre de la OTAN. Pero la Alianza tendría que dedicar una parte considerable de su programa en el sur de Gales a las amenazas que, después del asombroso recrudecimiento de las hostilidades de este verano, plantea el Estado Islámico (EI) en Irak y en Siria.

La OTAN debería desarrollar un triple plan de acción para pasar a la ofensiva frente al EI, fortalecer las defensas colectivas contra posibles ataques terroristas en nuestros propios territorios y preparar una estrategia a largo plazo que sirva para gestionar en los años venideros las transiciones en materia de seguridad, política y economía que tengan lugar en Oriente Próximo.…  Seguir leyendo »

El viaje del presidente Obama a Europa va a permitir desarrollar las ideas perfiladas en su discurso de hace unos días en West Point y planificar la renovación de la relación transatlántica, que ha sido la columna vertebral de la alianza de democracias liberales en el mundo y del orden de posguerra pero hoy afronta nuevos desafíos.

Estos días se celebran los logros históricos de esa relación, con motivo del 70º aniversario del desembarco en Normandía. Yet the broader Afghan state is in crisis. Afghans we met with during a recent trip to Kabul warned that their country’s fragile democratic institutions were crumbling. If the current political trajectory continues, Afghan security forces may have no state left to defend.

With the one year anniversaries of the kidnappings of Israeli soldiers by Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah fast approaching, rumblings of another major conflict in the Middle East are in the air. Palestinians in Gaza are caught in the daily crossfire of fierce fights among Palestinian militant factions, tentative cease-fires are made and broken, and Qassam rockets are firing from that chaos into southern Israel. Many worry that extremists are working towards a repeat of last summer's conflicts.
