The surname Castro has been synonymous with Cuba since January 1959, first under Fidel, and then, after 2006 , under his younger brother Raúl. Consequently, much is being made of the fact that Raúl Castro is relinquishing all power on the eve of his 90th birthday. It would be a mistake to think that this piece of kabuki theater will bring change to Cuba any time soon.

The reality is that the Communist Party in Cuba, which has had total control of the island for over 60 years, is not about to relax its grip. And since this party is controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Cuba is really governed by an old-fashioned Latin American military junta.…  Seguir leyendo »

One of the most brutal dictators in modern history has just died. Oddly enough, some will mourn his passing, and many an obituary will praise him. Millions of Cubans who have been waiting impatiently for this moment for more than half a century will simply ponder his crimes and recall the pain and suffering he caused.

Why this discrepancy? Because deceit was one of Fidel Castro’s greatest talents, and gullibility is one of the world’s greatest frailties. A genius at myth-making, Castro relied on the human thirst for myths and heroes. His lies were beautiful, and so appealing. According to Castro and to his propagandists, the so-called revolution was not about creating a repressive totalitarian state and securing his rule as an absolute monarch, but rather about eliminating illiteracy, poverty, racism, class differences and every other ill known to humankind.…  Seguir leyendo »

Adiós al brutal Big Brother de Cuba

Uno de los dictadores más brutales de la historia moderna acaba de fallecer. Por extraño que parezca, algunos lamentarán su muerte y muchas notas necrológicas lo elogiarán. Millones de cubanos que aguardaron con impaciencia este momento durante más de medio siglo reflexionarán simplemente sobre sus crímenes, y recordarán el dolor y sufrimiento que causó.

¿Por qué esa discrepancia? Porque el engaño fue uno de los mayores talentos de Fidel Castro y la credulidad es una de las mayores debilidades del mundo. Genio en la creación de mitos, Castro se valió de la sed humana de mitos y héroes. Sus mentiras eran bellas, y muy seductoras.…  Seguir leyendo »
