Palestinians looking at the site of an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis, Gaza, on Tuesday. Yousef Masoud for The New York Times

Each day the Israel-Gaza war continues, the risks of a cataclysm intensify.

After Israel’s horrific loss of over 1,400 civilians and soldiers on Oct. 7, the civilian death toll of Palestinians in Gaza is now nothing short of staggering. More than 10,300 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, including over 4,100 children. Conditions are deteriorating fast in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with at least 155 Palestinians killed, over 2,150 arrested and threats of ethnic cleansing being voiced by Israeli political and settler leaders.

In the north, relatively measured daily exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah could explode into a full-blown conflict any day, engulfing much of Lebanon and Israel.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

Has Europe just discovered a previously unused muscle that can be flexed a little in the interest of Middle East peace? The leaking of European Union guidelines barring E.U. support for projects based in occupied territories has generated high political drama.

But first of all it is worth clarifying that the guidelines apply only to programs of the European Union, and not to those of its 28 member states or to trade; that they constitute a codification of existing policy rather than new policy; and that they are of minor significance in economic terms (Europeans sources estimated that only 0.5 percent of relevent E.U.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

Seven years ago today, the Israeli flag was lowered over the Gaza Strip after approximately 7,500 Israeli settlers left or were forcibly removed.

We cannot know with certainty what Ariel Sharon, Israel’s prime minister at the time and the architect of the Gaza disengagement, had in mind: A dramatic step toward peace? The first of several removals of Israeli settlements from Palestinian land? Or a tactical and minimalist retreat — giving a little (Gaza) to keep a lot (the West Bank)?

One thing is clear: The years from 2005 to 2012 have been seven decidedly lean ones for peacemaking and withdrawal and seven gluttonously fat ones for entrenching Israel’s occupation and settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.…  Seguir leyendo »

The report of the UN fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict is outrageous, a disgrace. The mission's head, Richard Goldstone, was the chair of the Friends of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, chair of the World ORT education organisation with more than 150 schools in Israel and a self-declared friend of Israel whose daughter made aliyah – Zionist emigration to Israel – and she told Israeli army radio this week, "Israel is more important to me than anything."

Wait a moment, that doesn't sound right. Ah, here it is – the report of the UN fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict is outrageous, a disgrace.…  Seguir leyendo »
