The status of the city as the highest form of human social organisation has been an idea, and an ideal, which has maintained pre-eminence since at least the time of the Greeks. Cities are not only drivers of economic growth and development, they create a framework that drives progress in all aspects of cultural, intellectual and social activity.
It is perhaps both a symptom and a cause of a modern global malaise that not only is the role and function of cities being questioned, but the viability of their very continued existence.
