Cuando las vacunas contra la COVID-19 empezaron a abrir el mundo a algunos de los que vivimos en Los Ángeles, una ciudad devastada por la pandemia, volver a los restaurantes, clubes de baile, bares o teatros era una prioridad para muchos. Sin embargo, la mía era volver a los centros comerciales.

Me hacía falta curiosear y comprar a mi antojo, pasear por mis tiendas y locales de productos selectos favoritos sin ningún plan, tocar blusas vaporosas colgadas en ganchos, buscar en una mesa de bolsos en oferta, inhalar el aroma de una nueva crema corporal en el mostrador de maquillaje, sin pensar con mucha seriedad si compraría algo o no.…  Seguir leyendo »

Everyone’s an Antiracist. Now What?

The new unbridled enthusiasm for the cause of Black lives reminds me of the Dr. Seuss fable “Horton Hears a Who.”

A kindly elephant named Horton becomes aware of a whole planet of creatures called Whos living on a single speck of dust. Horton can hear the Whos perfectly, and accepts them as friends and equals. Horton’s friends, who can’t see or hear the Whos, denounce him as crazy, and a few set out to destroy the speck of dust.

It’s only when all the Whos raise their voices in a single chorus — “We are here!” — that they are heard by the larger world: In an instant, Horton’s friends’ skepticism turn into amazement, then into a celebration of the Whos, who they now know are real, and equal.…  Seguir leyendo »
