Les douze derniers mois ont été les plus chauds jamais enregistrés sur la planète. Cette réalité fait du changement climatique, non pas seulement une menace pour l’avenir, mais une part de plus en plus importante de notre présent. Mais il ne s’agit pas d’un présent, ni d’un futur, partagé de manière équitable.

Les pays pauvres sont souvent dans des climats déjà chauds. A mesure que la planète se réchauffe, ils subissent donc davantage un plus grand nombre de jours où les températures sont difficilement compatibles avec la vie humaine (au-delà de 35 degrés). De plus, la pauvreté est un obstacle de taille à l’adaptation : quand il fait 35 degrés au Texas, un employé de bureau peut passer de l’air frais de sa maison à l’air frais de son bureau en voyageant dans sa voiture fraîche ; quand il fait 35 degrés au Pakistan, les habitants des régions rurales ont chaud chez eux, où il n’y a pas l’air conditionné, et doivent souvent réaliser des travaux physiques à l’extérieur.…  Seguir leyendo »

Maximizar la inversión del dinero

La innovación puede tener un efecto profundo en nuestras vidas. Gracias a los avances tecnológicos que redujeron el precio de la energía solar casi el 90% entre 2009 y 2019, la transición a energías verdes está a nuestro alcance. Asimismo, la innovación agrícola ha ayudado a triplicar la cantidad de alimentos cultivados por hectárea desde 1960, reduciendo drásticamente el hambre a pesar, inclusive, de que la población mundial cuando menos se duplicó. Y la tecnología de vacunas ARNm ha salvado incontables vidas durante la pandemia del COVID-19.

Las sociedades han establecido diversos mecanismos para fomentar la innovación. Uno de ellos es el sistema de mercado: las empresas pagan por investigación y desarrollo con la esperanza de vender innovaciones y ganar dinero a cambio, y los inversores respaldan a las empresas si piensan que sus productos o servicios se venderán bien.…  Seguir leyendo »

It will be a while before it’s fully understood why India has been so swiftly and so disastrously engulfed by the coronavirus. But there is one thing for sure: India’s problem is now the world’s problem.

India shut down too abruptly when the virus arrived, and then was too quick to reopen. In March 2020, the country was locked down at four hours’ notice though it did not yet have many cases. Millions of people, many of them migrant workers, were left stranded without food and shelter. For millions of girls around the world, motherhood comes too early. Those who bear children as adolescents suffer higher maternal mortality and morbidity rates, and their children are more likely to die in infancy. One reliable way to solve this problem is through education. The more affordable it is, the longer girls will stay in school and delay pregnancy.

I advise a nonprofit foundation called Innovation for Poverty Action that focuses on keeping girls in school. (We aren’t alone; lots of other terrific organizations do this, too.) In a pilot program we ran in Kenya a few years ago, around 5,000 sixth-grade girls in 163 primary schools were given a $6 school uniform free.…  Seguir leyendo »
