Russia's invasion of Ukraine has changed energy markets and policies around the world, not just for the time being, but for decades to come. The energy crisis set off by Moscow’s war is giving a short-term lift to fossil fuels in some cases. More coal has been burned in Europe, for example, because natural-gas prices have been extremely high. But I think this lift is likely to be temporary. The crisis is also driving powerful structural changes that are set to accelerate the transition to clean energy. The Covid-19 crisis not only delivered an unprecedented shock to the world economy. It also underscored the scale of the climate challenge we face: Even in the current deep recession, global carbon emissions remain unsustainable.

If the world is to meet energy security and climate goals, clean energy must be at the core of post-Covid-19 economic recovery efforts. Strong growth in wind and solar energy and in the use of electric cars gives us grounds for hope, as does the promise of emerging technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture. But the scale of the challenge means we cannot afford to exclude any available technologies, including nuclear power — the world's second-largest source of low-carbon electricity after hydropower.…  Seguir leyendo »

Parque solar de Grenergy en Chile.

Después de siete años de lento crecimiento, los países latinoamericanos experimentarán su mayor contracción en las últimas décadas como resultado de la crisis producida por la pandemia de covid-19, profundizando los problemas sociales y económicos que afectan a una buena parte de la población y, en particular, a los sectores más vulnerables y de menores ingresos.

A pesar de esta difícil y compleja situación, existen muchas razones para ser optimistas sobre el futuro de América Latina. La región tiene abundantes recursos naturales y una población joven y diversa.
