David Cameron failed the test of trust, and paid the price
The Prime Minister was as good as his word. President Barack Obama was not . David Cameron will this morning have plenty of cause to regret following through his promise. His gamble on recalling Parliament has ended in what is perhaps the biggest humiliation of his premiership.
To be forced to dilute the motion at the last minute was bad enough, but to suffer a rebellion on this magnitude – even on the watered-down motion – is devastating. British prime ministers are just not supposed to lose votes on issues as fundamental as war and peace.
