Estamos trabajando en forma urgente para hacer más por la gente y por el planeta. Una serie de perturbaciones simultáneas ha tensionado la capacidad de los países para enfrentar el hambre, la pobreza y la desigualdad, crear resiliencia e invertir en sus futuros. La vulnerabilidad financiera de los países de ingresos bajos y medios pone serios obstáculos a su recuperación económica y a su capacidad para hacer inversiones esenciales a largo plazo.

Estamos trabajando en forma urgente para combatir la pobreza y las desigualdades. Se calcula que en los últimos tres años unos 120 millones de personas han sido arrojadas a la pobreza extrema, y todavía estamos lejos de alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de las Naciones Unidas en 2030.…  Seguir leyendo »

From May 19 to 21, I am hosting the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union in Hiroshima for the 2023 summit of the G-7. The symbolism of the location is both powerful and deliberate. Hiroshima, the city I have represented throughout my political career, was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945, the first time nuclear weapons were used. That terrible history led me to make nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation my life’s work, animated by the ideal of a world without nuclear weapons. Today, Hiroshima’s past should serve as a reminder of what can happen when peace and order break down and give way to instability and conflict—a reminder that is needed more than at any other time in recent decades.…  Seguir leyendo »

La cumbre de la OTAN en Madrid es una cita primordial para prever la siguiente etapa de la era post Guerra Fría.

La crisis en Ucrania nos ha hecho tomar conciencia de nuevo de que la seguridad de Europa y de la región del Indo-Pacífico es indivisible. Con la gran preocupación de que la situación de Ucrania de hoy pueda ser la de Asia oriental de mañana; Japón ha decidido dar un giro en su política hacia Rusia y estamos imponiendo fuertes sanciones y brindando apoyo a Ucrania, en coordinación con los países socios.…  Seguir leyendo »

The city of Hiroshima sits in a beautiful location, surrounded by sea and mountains. It has a rich culture and history, and has been a symbol of peace and hope since its recovery from the atomic bombing in 1945. It is also my hometown, and so the issue of nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation has always had a special resonance for myself and others living here.

Indeed, just two weeks ago, I listened to young people gathered in the city to talk about how they might help make progress in achieving their wish for a world without nuclear weapons. On August 6, 1945, a single bomb was dropped that took more than 130,000 lives in my hometown of Hiroshima, Japan.

Seventy years later, one survivor's message in particular is etched into my thoughts. Indeed, it has become a personal conviction of mine, as well: "Even though I would like to forget what happened to us, I must always remember the atomic bombing, to help ensure that the experience is never repeated."

As we mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is vital that we learn from the past to help ensure a more peaceful future.…  Seguir leyendo »
