Living in the United States, we now enjoy the right to speak freely. We are in Washington this week exercising that right by telling our stories — the stories of rights lawyers and their families who so often face persecution in the People’s Republic of China — to anyone who will listen. But we know that our voices alone will not be enough. As the Chinese government continues to punish those inside the country who stand up for the rights of others, we need the United States and President Obama to stand with us and demand that this repression end.

With the world’s attention on the uprisings in the Middle East, repressive regimes elsewhere are taking the opportunity to tighten their grip on power. In China, human rights activists have been disappearing since a call went out last month for a Tunisian-style “Jasmine Revolution.” I know what their families are going through. Almost a year ago, the Chinese government seized my husband and since then, we have had no news of him. I don’t know where he is, or even if he is alive.

In 2001, the Ministry of Justice listed my husband, Gao Zhisheng, as one of the top 10 lawyers in China.…  Seguir leyendo »

One year ago today, China kidnapped my husband.

I don't know where he is. I don't know what is being done to him. The only thing I know is why he disappeared: My husband, Gao Zhisheng, defied Beijing by representing people the government finds threatening. As a leading human rights lawyer in China, he fought for those who had been abused by police, those who had their land stolen by the government and those who were persecuted for their religious beliefs.

And now my husband is one of those persecuted people he so vigorously defended. Chinese authorities abducted Zhisheng on Feb.…  Seguir leyendo »
