Two photos taken during the Ukraine crisis seem to sum up the relative positions of Russia and the western alliance. The first is of Vladimir Putin at his now famous long table — his physical distance from visiting leaders symbolising Russia’s isolation. The second image is of Joe Biden in the middle of a group of Nato leaders — with the US president surrounded by friends and allies.

Amid all the horror of the war in Ukraine, some in the US and Europe have spotted a silver lining in the revival of the western alliance. Ivo Daalder, a former US ambassador to Nato, captured the new mood in a recent co-authored article, with James Lindsay, headlined: “Why Putin Underestimated the West”.…  Seguir leyendo »

The western alliance has threatened the Kremlin with “massive” and “unprecedented” sanctions if Russia attacks Ukraine. But, as the Ukraine crisis reaches boiling point, western efforts to isolate and punish Russia are likely to be undermined by the support of China — Russia’s giant neighbour.

When Vladimir Putin travels to Beijing for the beginning of the Winter Olympics on February 4, the Russian president will meet the leader who has become his most important ally — Xi Jinping of China. In a phone call between Putin and Xi in December, the Chinese leader supported Russia’s demand that Ukraine must never join Nato.…  Seguir leyendo »

¿Qué está haciendo China? Desde Hong Kong a Taiwán y desde el Mar del Sur de China hasta la frontera india, el gobierno chino, dirigido por el presidente Xi Jinping, está implementando políticas más agresivas. Existe una creciente preocupación acerca del comportamiento de Beijing, no sólo en Washington sino también en Delhi, Londres, Tokio y Canberra.

El gobierno chino tal vez crea que debido al coronavirus éste es un buen momento para actuar, ya que el mundo está distraído con otras cosas. La agitación en las calles de EE.UU. ha dividido y distraído aún más al Occidente.
