La COVID-19 y el Reloj del Apocalipsis

En enero del año pasado, mis colegas en The Elders Mary Robinson y Ban Ki-moon participaron en la presentación actualizada del Reloj del Apocalipsis, el indicador de riesgo mundial de catástrofes que publica todos los años el Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. En 2020 las manecillas del reloj se acercaron a la «medianoche» más que nunca en toda su historia (a sólo cien segundos de distancia) y allí permanecerán durante 2021.

El hecho de que este año no hayamos terminado más cerca de la medianoche ofrece poco consuelo. La pandemia de COVID‑19 ha sido una demostración clara y mortífera de la precariedad de nuestro estilo de vida.…  Seguir leyendo »

Cómo prevenir la próxima pandemia

Imaginemos el siguiente escenario. En cuestión de días, una epidemia de gripe letal se propaga por todo el mundo, interrumpiendo el comercio y el turismo, desatando un caos social, destrozando la economía global y poniendo en peligro decenas de millones de vidas. Un brote de enfermedad de gran escala es una perspectiva alarmante –pero completamente realista-. Para mitigar los riesgos, el mundo debe tomar medidas hoy para estar preparado.

En los últimos años, se ha producido una letanía de brotes –desde la fiebre amarilla hasta el ébola-, inclusive en zonas densamente pobladas. Hoy, un nuevo informe de la Junta de Monitoreo de Preparación Global advierte que la humanidad está trastabillando hacia el equivalente del siglo XXI de la epidemia de gripe de 1918, que afectó a un tercio de la población del mundo y mató a aproximadamente 50 millones de personas.…  Seguir leyendo »

El difunto Kofi Annan dijo una vez que el cambio climático es el "problema existencial de nuestro tiempo". Una ola de eventos climáticos extremos el verano pasado -desde incendios forestales en California y Suecia hasta inundaciones en India y sequías en Australia- muestran lo acertado que estaba. Y como también entendió Annan, enfrentar esta crisis no significa solo proteger la economía o el medio ambiente; también implica defender la justicia, preservar los derechos humanos y comprometerse con la solidaridad social.

Durante más de cuatro décadas, estos valores han motivado mi trabajo para avanzar en el desarrollo sostenible a nivel nacional e internacional.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seventy years ago, the United Nations was founded “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.” Looking around the world today, the least one can say is that it is not fully succeeding in this mission. From Nigeria through the Middle East to Afghanistan and Ukraine, millions are suffering and dying from that scourge, or are imminently threatened by it, and the United Nations seems powerless to save them.

We have four ideas for making the organization stronger and more effective.

A big part of the problem is that the Security Council, which is supposed to maintain world peace and security on behalf of all member states, no longer commands respect — certainly not from armed insurgents operating across borders, and often not from the United Nations’ own members.…  Seguir leyendo »

If the recent rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli air strikes on Gaza tell us anything, it is that the status quo in the Middle East is not a safe choice for Israelis or Palestinians.

In the current political climate, it is highly unlikely that bilateral talks between Israel and the Palestinians can restart. Action is needed that will alter the current dynamic. As Elders, we believe that the Palestinian statehood bid at the United Nations is such a moment.

On Nov. 29, U.N. member states will be asked to vote on a resolution to grant “non-member observer state status” to Palestine, a significant upgrade from its current “observer entity” status.…  Seguir leyendo »

On Wednesday, world leaders will gather in Rio de Janeiro to review progress made in the 20 years since the 1992 U.N. Earth Summit and hopefully to chart a new path toward a more sustainable future. Protecting the planet and its people must be their first priority.

Our central concern is that governments are currently refusing to make the transformative changes needed to resolve the global sustainability crisis.

The scientific evidence is clear that the environmental dangers are rising quickly. Based on current trends, we are likely to move toward a world warmer by 3 degrees, and we may well cross tipping points with potentially catastrophic consequences.…  Seguir leyendo »

El cambio climático se ha convertido en un problema global sin parangón. La evidencia científica presentada por el Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) confirma que la actividad humana está modificando el clima. Las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero están creciendo más rápido de lo previsto, entre otras cosas, debido al bienvenido crecimiento de los países en vías de desarrollo. Si verdaderamente queremos hacer frente al riesgo de considerables daños al planeta y a la amenaza al crecimiento sostenible, el desarrollo y la reducción de la pobreza que esta situación implica, tenemos unos pocos años para lograr el acuerdo fuerte y creíble respecto a las acciones que nos permitirán reducir dichas emisiones.…  Seguir leyendo »
