Cette semaine, le monde espère que des progrès seront réalisés au sommet de Copenhague. Le processus international dans lequel il s'inscrit constitue, je crois, l'une des démarches les plus importantes de notre époque, car faute de limiter notre impact sur l'atmosphère de la planète, il faut s'attendre aux conséquences les plus terribles. Le défi à relever n'est pas simplement politique et technologique. Il s'adresse tout autant à notre volonté de coopérer et à notre aptitude à penser différemment.

A ce propos, j'ai été très impressionné par l'initiative prise il y a quelques mois par le président Sarkozy, lorsqu'il a créé la commission sur la mesure des performances économiques et du progrès social.…  Seguir leyendo »

We live in an age when technological ease has become so much a part of the accustomed way of life that it seems “natural” to some, even their right. But what does our dependence upon such technology do to our connection with Nature? Does our increasing dependence upon technology make us believe that we, too, and the world about us, are merely part of some enormous mechanical process?

Times Christmas Appeal 2006

At the launch of this newspaper’s Christmas appeal in aid of the British Red Cross, of which I am proud to be President, it was rightly noted that many people underestimate the role and importance of this singularly dynamic, humanitarian organization. This year has vividly illustrated the power of the voluntary spirit that lies at the heart of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement’s work. Across the globe, and particularly here in the United Kingdom, its volunteers give selflessly of themselves to bring succour to those who, all too often, have nowhere else to turn.…  Seguir leyendo »
