The latest reports indicate China may have conducted two tests involving a new type of nuclear-capable strategic missile this summer. The system reportedly completed an orbit of the globe before its hypersonic glider payload descended to Earth.

China has denied the story and security analysts remain unclear about the exact nature of the system Beijing reportedly tested. Here’s what we know so far.

What is China supposed to have tested?

If the news reporting is accurate, China tested two distinct capabilities in one weapon: an orbital bombardment system and a hypersonic glide vehicle.

The launch vehicle China used was allegedly an orbital bombardment system (OBS).…  Seguir leyendo »

What do rockets burn for fuel? Money. Money that is contributed by working families who have mortgages and children who need braces. And why do the American people support our efforts in space? Because they still believe, to some extent or another, in that shining dream of exploring other worlds. So it could be said that rockets really run on dreams.

The exploration of space is the grandest adventure challenging the human race. As a filmmaker I have celebrated this greatest of dreams in my movies and documentaries, and I remain as passionate about the discoveries ahead as I was when I was a kid.…  Seguir leyendo »

In the past few weeks we have seen graphic evidence of how institutions and individuals could create wealth that turned out to be illusory. The ability of capitalism to deliver real wealth so that society can survive and prosper is being seriously challenged.

The industry for creating wealth, which we assumed to be efficient, well organised and smart, has contrived to lose spectacular amounts of ordinary people's money, requiring the State to intervene in the public interest. But it is also true that even now, capital markets continue to invest in creating risk - climate risk.

We are already hearing arguments for focusing everything on the economy damaged by failure in the banking system, dropping the need to fix the climate system.…  Seguir leyendo »

How do you make a tree worth more alive than dead? This question will certainly not be put so simply but it is one of the main ones occupying the minds of those gathered on the Indonesian island of Bali this week for the UN conference on climate change.

It is a question of vast importance to the world and if an answer is found then we will have gone a considerable way to combating climate change.

Bali is an apt venue. When you include emissions from deforestation, Indonesia ranks third in the world league table of carbon emitters (the US claims the top spot and China is second) and the cause of most of its pollution is the burning of rainforests, responsible for 85 per cent of that country's emissions.…  Seguir leyendo »

Today one the most important decisions about the planet’s future for years to come will be made.

José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, will announce the caps on emissions that it will impose on its member states from 2008 to 2012. Around the world, from California to Australia, from New York to Japan, politicians, businesses and opinion formers are watching to see whether we Europeans have the conviction to make the system that prices carbon and punishes polluters work properly.

Those who want to create their own carbon-pricing schemes are keen for the system to work but will lose political momentum if it doesn’t.…  Seguir leyendo »
